Mock “Apartheid” Wall Kicks off Palestine Awareness Week at UCLA

Monday, February 27, marked the start of Palestine Awareness Week at the University of California — Los Angeles. The weeklong event, timed to coincide with the Israeli Apartheid Week is sponsored by the university’s chapter of Students for Justice in Palestine (SJP), the primary organizer of anti-Israel activity on campus.

A large outdoor “apartheid wall” containing extreme anti-Israel imagery and text has been erected at the university’s central public gathering space, Bruin Plaza.Texts on the panels include accusations that Israel is an apartheid state that persecutes and deprives Palestinians of their fundamental rights.

There are also Holocaust analogies comparing the Nazi ghettos of Europe with conditions facing Palestinians in Gaza. Comparisons to the Holocaust are displayed under the banner of “Never Again? History Repeats Itself.” The panels also feature statistics and “facts” portraying a skewed and inaccurate image of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.

The “apartheid wall” has also been displayed at a public area across the Student Activities Center in Wilson Plaza in order to more broadly reach the student public.

In addition to the “apartheid wall,” SJP members gathered Tuesday evening to denounce Israel with delegitimizing slogans like “Israel is a terrorist state.” Other events scheduled for Palestine Awareness Week include a one-state solution lecture by UCLA professor Sari Madison and a panel on Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions (BDS).

Profile on Stephen Walt, Speaker at Upcoming “One State” Conference

Stephen Walt, an International Affairs Professor at the Kennedy School of Government, is scheduled to speak at this weekend’s one-state solution conference at the Kennedy School. Walt will participate in a panel discussion called “What Happened to the Two-State Solution?” The two other panelists, Ali Abunimah and Eve Spangler, are both supporters of a one-state solution, which would necessarily result in the dismantlement of Israel as a Jewish state.
Walt’s anti-Israel positions were most prominently aired in his 2007 book, “The Israel Lobby and U.S. Foreign Policy,” which he co-authored with John Mearsheimer. Since its publication, Walt has spoken to a variety of audiences about U.S. policy on the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, asserting that the pro-Israel lobby in the U.S. has excessive power and divided loyalties and uses its power to stifle criticism of Israel against America’s true interests.
Walt also regularly focuses on Israel on his blog on ForeignPolicy.com. In the past year, Walt has authored more than a dozen posts about Israel, most of which focus exclusively on why the special relationship between Israel and the U.S. negatively affects American interests and should therefore cease to exist.
Walt’s framing of the issue makes it seem like pro-Israel forces in the U.S. engage in coercive tactics and compel U.S. policymakers to take harmful decisions on matters related to Israel. In a November 2011 post titled, “Is Israel REALLY a strategic asset?,” Walt writes, “Israel is the only country in the world that mainstream U.S. politicians (and most members of the foreign-policy establishment) cannot openly criticize.”

Anti-Semitic Prelude to Farrakhan’s Saviours’ Day Diatribe

In a prelude to Louis Farrakhan’s anti-Semitic keynote address at the United Center in Chicago  on February 26, the Nation of Islam held a plenary session titled “Business is Warfare: The Secret Relationship Between Blacks and Jews” as part of its Saviours’ Day weekend.
During the February 24 session, named after a set of NOI books alleging that Jewish exploitation of Blacks during the slave trade has caused deep and prolonged repercussions for African-Americans, several speakers promoted anti-Semitic conspiracy theories in line with Farrakhan’s record.
  • Referring to Jews, Louis Farrakhan’s daughter Donna Farrakhan said, “They didn’t intend for us to have freedom, justice and equality. They built it on our backs, our blood, our sweat, and our tears.”
  • Leonard Jeffries

Leonard Jeffries, former head of the black studies department at City College of New York, said Jewish owned banks lent money to slave traders. “The evil genius of the Jewish community was to put together their powers to make business their religion and make it part of their culture.”

  • Dr. Ridgely Muhammad, Minister of Agriculture for the Nation of Islam, said, “The so called Jews were the ones supporting the KKK and financing them. They formed the KKK.”
Over the past three years, the Nation of Islam (NOI) has engaged in a wide-ranging campaign to demonize Jews. Not only have the speeches delivered by Louis Farrakhan been among the most hateful of his 30-year career as head of the NOI, but the organization’s media arm has also reinforced these messages through a range of propaganda.
