Anti-Semite Dieudonne In the News in France

Update: Dieudonne ran unsuccessfully for French Parliament as the Anti-Zionist Party candidate from Dreux. He was eliminated in the second round of the election, receiving just 1.14% of votes castHis film, L’Antisémite, has been banned from the Cannes film festival for violating the festival’s policy of not “threatening public order or insulting religious beliefs.”

Anti-Semitic performer Dieudonne M’Bala M’Bala has garnered some media attention in France since he announced on May 18 that he will be running for Parliament as a member of the Anti-Zionist Party (Parti Anti-Sioniste or PAS) in upcoming elections. Dieudonne is known for his performances which routinely include Holocaust denial, praise for Adolf Hitler, Nazi salutes, slurs against the Talmud and other anti-Semitic language.

This is not Dieudonne’s first time running for political office. Most recently, he stood as a candidate for the European Parliament in 2009 with the Anti-Zionist Party, receiving 1.3% of the vote. According to its website, the Anti-Zionist Party’s primary goal is to remove the “Zionist intervention” from the public affairs of France.

Dieudonne, one of four PAS members running for Parliament, hopes to represent the city of Dreux, 50 miles west of Paris. The other PAS candidates are running in the 8th and 13th districts in the North as well as the 14th district in the Rhone region.

While Dieudonne has repeatedly been prosecuted for his racist and anti-Semitic performances and comments, none of his criminal convictions render his candidacy illegal. According to an article in the French edition of The Huffington Post, even if his campaign materials incite hatred or racial violence, the penalties would be significant (€45,000 fine and five years in prison) but would not make him ineligible for Parliament.

As a 501©(3) organization, ADL does not endorse or oppose candidates for office in the United States or abroad.

Violent Clashes at “Other” Chicago Summit

Event announcement on Stormfront

The extreme right and the far left clashed violently in the Chicago area over the weekend of May 19, with police making arrests on both sides. The scene, however, was not the high-profile NATO Summit hosted by the city of Chicago that weekend. Rather, the clash occurred at a small restaurant in Tinley Park, Illinois, where a group of white supremacists were holding their own confab, a “White Nationalist Economic Summit.”

Around 15 white supremacists from around the country attended this “economic summit,” only to have it crashed by a roughly equal number of left-wing and anarchist activists associated with the Chicago-based Southside Anti-Racist Action (ARA), a group that has disrupted past white supremacist events in Chicago, and the Indiana-based Hoosier Anti-Racist Movement (HARM). The left-wing activists allegedly attacked the white supremacists with baseball bats, hammers, and metal chains, causing injuries that led three people to be taken to the hospital with head injuries. Police subsequently arrested five of the activists (all from HARM), charging them with mob action, aggravated battery and criminal damage to property.

The Tinley Park event was the fifth white supremacist “economic summit” organized since 2010, four of which have occurred in the Midwest. It was organized by white supremacists from Illinois and South Dakota under the auspices of the “Illinois European Heritage Association.” Most attendees were members of the racist Stormfront website, and some had associations with other extremist groups, such as the National Socialist Movement and the Knights Party. The events are something of an outgrowth of a white supremacist concept known as the Pioneer Little Europe (PLE) movement, which seeks to establish mutually supportive white supremacist enclaves throughout the United States.

Police also arrested two of the attendees at the “summit.” Steven Eugene Speers, 33, of Grand Forks, North Dakota, was arrested on a child pornography warrant from Texas, while Francis John Gilroy, Jr., 65, of West Palm Beach, Florida, was charged with unlawful possession of weapons by a felon.

Left-wing activists and white supremacists alike have been angered and energized by this violent confrontation, opening the possibility of future violent clashes or acts of retaliation. The organizers of the summit, meanwhile, are planning a future event in Omaha, Nebraska.

New Arabic Translation of Talmud Promotes Anti-Semitic Narratives

Update: The Anti-Defamation League publicly criticized the translation and called on the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan to take steps to correct the misleading anti-Semitic narratives in the introduction to the Arabic translation of the Talmud.

A newly released Arabic translation of the Talmud – the first of its kind – contains an introduction that seeks to revive age-old anti-Semitic conspiracies about the Talmud, including the accusation that the ancient text reveals the racist character of the Jewish people. The introduction also attempts to paint Israel as the modern-day embodiment of the alleged racist ideologies found in the Talmud.

The translation, which was published by the Middle East Studies Center (MESC), a Jordan-based think tank, specifically couples anti-Semitic narratives with anti-Israel propaganda: “The discrimination which Arabs in Israel face is an extension of the racist spirit included in many Talmud texts and explanations.”

In an effort to claim that the Talmud is an inherently racist text, the introduction repeatedly seeks to exploit and take out of context certain passages in the Talmud, including deceptively referring to injunctions that seem to “prove” that Jews regard non-Jews as inferior. The introduction, for example, notes,

“These texts confirm the racist and hostile perception toward the non-Jews, especially those who threaten the ‘chosen nation’ and stand in the way of its ambitions and hopes. There is no doubt that Israel is the best example of this racist position, both in the level of its daily crimes against the Palestinians and the level of its rejection and contempt for international resolutions and laws. For what applies to other countries in the world does not apply to contemporary Israel, as it is unique…Jews, according to this racist position [of the Talmud], are permitted to do what is not permitted for non-Jews.”

Elsewhere in the introduction, the reader is informed that the Talmud claims that non-Jews are inhuman, may be tricked or cheated, that it is permissible to kill them, and so on.

The conclusion of the introduction neatly merges the publishers’ anti-Semitic and anti-Israel proclivities:  “The Talmudic heritage has a significant impact on the formulation of Jewish identity based on holy [principles of] racial isolation…It [the Talmud] also established the extreme positions that advocate hatred toward non-Jews, the violation of their rights and looting of their lands and property.” The publisher then refers to the Zionist movement’s alleged “crimes” against the Palestinian people as an example of the Talmud’s validation of racist policies.

MESC, established in 1991, is a Jordan-based political think tank that focuses on the Middle East and North Africa. The Center has a special unit on Israeli affairs, which monitors Israel, Zionist organizations and Hebrew-language media. MESC is highly critical of Israel, and organized a conference last year on the Palestinian unilateral declaration efforts to which they invited senior Muslim Brotherhood leaders as well as Hamas officials.
Al-Jazeera has specifically promoted this book as a contribution to the “establishment of Arabic language Jewish studies” as well as claiming that the translation “identifies the features of the Jewish character that blend elements of racial superiority with Mosaic teachings.”
