Cornell SJP Publication Features Terrorist Logo and Describes Israel as “White Supremacist State”

The message on the handcuffs reads, “South-African Steel/Made in Israel.”

A publication titled “Liberation Now: The Struggle for Justice in Palestine” was published earlier this month by the Cornell University chapter of Students for Justice in Palestine. The publication, which is designed to look like a newspaper, apparently aims to correct the “misinformation” about the Israeli-Palestinian conflict but the result is a virulently anti-Israel manifesto.

Articles in the newspaper describe Israel as a “white supremacist state” that is guilty of the “crime of apartheid” and of discriminating against Palestinians with “21st-century Jim Crow-esque laws.” One article conspiratorially claims that university administrators “essentially took orders from the Zionist groups on campus” regarding an anti-Israel rally that took place during Operation Pillar of Defense. And one of the images in the newspaper includes the logo of the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine (PFLP), a Palestinian terrorist organization.

The newspaper also urges students to support the Boycott, Divestment, and Sanctions (BDS) movement against Israel and lists specific BDS targets, including TIAA-CREF, the retirement fund used by Cornell’s faculty; Israel’s Technion University because Cornell and Technion are collaborating on a joint campus in New York City; and several other Israeli companies that Cornell directly or indirectly supports like Sabra, whose hummus is offered in the school’s cafeteria.

The pro-boycott sentiments that appear in the newspaper are not limited to companies that profit from the Israeli occupation. They instead specifically advocate for the Palestinians’ call for BDS as expressed by the Palestinian Campaign for the Academic and Cultural Boycott of Israel. That BDS movement asks communities to boycott, divest from, and sanction Israel until it ends the occupation of Arab lands, grants equal rights to all its citizens, and honors the Palestinian right of return.”

The students who authored the newspaper claim that by exposing and publicizing their allegations against Israel, as well as Cornell’s complicity in alleged Israeli wrongdoings, they will serve as a “physical refutation of the white supremacist attitudes of both Israel and the Cornell administration….We’ll always be a threat to the Israeli lobby and its partner, Cornell University.”

Anti-Semitism Right on Your iPod

Interested in listening to an anti-Semitic lecture while commuting to work or going for a run? A variety of anti-Semitic podcasts by scholars and religious leaders in the Arab world are available for download through iTunes.

A downloadable lecture by Abu Bakr al-Jaza’iri, a prominent scholar and Islamic studies professor who lives in Saudi Arabia, accuses Jews of spreading atheism and corruption in the world. The lecture, titled “The Role of Jews in Defaming the Hijab,” blames Jews for setting off a women’s liberation movement in Islam and claims that Jews aim to spread the same corruption and immorality among Muslims that they previously spread to Europeans. Al-Jaza’iri says, “They [the Jews] targeted Europe. How did they attack it? They founded the Bolsevik secular atheist sect also known as Marxist Communism…humanity never knew atheism before the Jewish gang plot.” He also accuses Jews of causing world wars: “The Second World War was sparked by the Jews… no world war was started without the Jews.”

Another available lecture refers to the Talmud to advance anti-Semitic theories about Jews. The lecture, by prominent Egyptian Sheik Muhammad Hassan, is called “Black Pages From the History of Jews” and describes the Talmud as a “filthy sexually perverted vulgar book.” Sheik Hassan also claims that Jews are guilty of “cheating and spreading corruption on Earth.” The lecture originally aired on Al Rahma, an Egyptian Islamist television station.

There are also several downloadable podcasts that feature support for terrorism and calls for violence against Jews. One such lecture by Saudi cleric Sheik Khalid al-Rashid, who is currently serving a 15-year prison term because of criticism of the Saudi government, glorifies Palestinian terrorism and tells the story of a Palestinian suicide bomber who attacked “the enemies… the Jews, who are the sons of apes and pigs.” The sheik weeps emotionally as he describes how the suicide bomber then ascended to paradise. The lecture is titled “Khaiber Khaiber Ya Yahood,” which refers to an Islamic story of an allegedly violent battle between the prophet Muhammad and the Jews of the town of Khaibar, which resulted in the subjugation of the Jews of Arabia.

A similarly themed lecture by prominent Saudi cleric Sheik Salih al-Munajjid calls on Muslims to attack Jews. The lecture, titled “Oh Jews, the Muslims are Coming,” advocates for jihad and explains that “to assassinate Jewish leaders is a great Sunnah [Islamic way].”

Hezbollah and a Palestinian media organization that claims to be the mouthpiece for Hamas have previously launched smartphone applications via iTunes. The Hezbollah app was removed last July.

New “Environmentalist” Book, Life on the Brink, Features Anti-Immigrant Writers

Phil Cafaro

Life on the Brink: Environmentalists Confront Overpopulation, a book released in December 2012, features essayists that have strong ties to the anti-immigrant movement, a detail that is missing from the authors’ bios.

Phil Cafaro, president of the DC-based anti-immigrant group Progressives for Immigration Reform (PFIR), and Eileen Crist, an environmental sciences professor at Virginia Tech, co-edited the book. It contains many essays that argue for reducing immigration for environmental reasons. This argument is one of the key themes promoted by the anti-immigrant movement in the United States.

Essayists in the book include:

Phil Cafaro – co-editor of the book and president of PFIR. Cafaro is a former fellow for the DC-based anti-immigrant group Center for Immigration Studies (CIS). In 2010, Cafaro wrote two blogs for the Virginia based anti-immigrant group NumbersUSA.

Al Bartlett – a University of Colorado emeritus professor and friend of John Tanton, the racist founder of the modern day anti-immigrant movement. To date, Bartlett has published ten articles, dating back to 1995, in Tanton’s quarterly journal, The Social Contract (TSC). TSC has published the writings of known white supremacists such as Sam Francis and Jared Taylor.

Don Weeden –head of the Weeden Foundation, a group that has donated hundreds of thousands of dollars to anti-immigrant groups throughout the years. Weeden is also an “independent advisor” for NumbersUSA. CIS has invited Weeden to speak on many panel discussions organized by the group over the years.

Leon Kolankiewicz – a senior writing fellow for the Santa Barbara-based anti-immigrant group Californians for Population Stabilization (CAPS). Over a half dozen articles by Kolankiewicz appear in issues of TSC, dating back to 2001. He has published numerous reports for both CIS and NumbersUSA in the past. Kolankiewicz sits on the advisory boards of CAPS and PFIR and is also the former vice-president of the anti-immigrant group Carrying Capacity Network, based in San Francisco.

Richard Lamm– the former governor of Colorado and a former member of Federation for American Immigration (FAIR)’s board. He currently sits on   FAIR’s advisory board as well as the advisory boards of CAPS and PFIR. Lamm also co-edited a report for CIS in 2001 and is published in two issues of TSC. He is also a close friend of Tanton’s.

William Ryerson – former president of PFIR and former advisory board member of CAPS. He currently heads two population awareness groups, the Vermont-based Population Media Center and the DC-based Population Institute. Ryerson is also a contributor to TSC.
