ADL Releases Report On American Muslims for Palestine

AMP press conference at a Metro North station

The Anti-Defamation League today released a new report on American Muslims for Palestine (AMP), the anti-Israel organization behind this week’s ad campaign appearing on 25 Metro North train stations in New York.

The ad, which was announced on the first day of the Jewish holiday of Passover, shows an image of an Israeli aiming a weapon at a Palestinian child amid a background of the separation barrier between Israel and the West Bank. The ad is indicative of the organization’s continuing efforts to promote its extreme anti-Israel views to a wider American audience.

ADL’s report details AMP’s continuous efforts to delegitimize and demonize the Jewish state while providing anti-Zionist training and education to students and Muslim community organization throughout the country.

Since its founding in 2005, AMP has at times provided a platform for anti-Semitism under the guise of estudents for justice in palestine, adl, ducating Americans about “the just cause of Palestine.” In more recent years, it has placed heavy emphasis on providing support and helping coordinate the activity of campus anti-Israel student groups, including Students for Justice in Palestine (SJP), the primary organizer of anti-Israel events on campus, as well as high school students.

White Supremacists To Stage Protest Over Memphis Parks

This Saturday, March 30, members of a North Carolina-based Ku Klux Klan group and other white supremacists will stage a protest at a courthouse in downtown Memphis, Tennessee, to protest that city’s decision to rename three local parks bearing names related to the Confederacy. In rallying support for the protest, Chris Barker, the “Imperial Wizard” of the Loyal White Knights of the Ku Klux Klan (LWK), told followers that the government was attempting to “erase all that our Anglo Saxon Race has to be proud of.” Following the protest, the LWK plans to host a cross-burning on private property at an undisclosed location.

A number of Klan groups reacted with anger in February 2013, after the Memphis City Council voted 9–0 to rename Nathan Bedford Forrest Park, Confederate Park and Jefferson Davis Park with less offensive titles. Of the three, the park named after Forrest had been the most controversial, as prior to the Civil War, Forrest had been a slave trader, and during the War was a general who had been associated with the massacre of African-American soldiers. After the war he became the first national leader of the Ku Klux Klan.

Klan reaction following the vote was predictable. James Moore, the LWK’s Grand Dragon for the Realm of Virginia, posted a YouTube video of himself attempting to describe the City Council’s unanimous vote as a “continuing cultural genocide [against] white Americans.” Frank Ancona, the Missouri-based leader of another Klan group, the Traditionalist American Knights, claimed that “niggardly politicians” had “declared WAR on our White Confederate Heroes and History.”

Barker launched a campaign asking his members and those of other Klan groups to call Memphis city council members to protest the decision, even providing Klansmen with their phone numbers and e-mail addresses. Frank Ancona urged his own members to participate in “calling these degenerate scum ASAP and let’s make them sorry they ever made this ridiculous decision.” Some city council members have reported receiving such communications.

On February 14, Tamra Crowder submitted a permit on behalf of the LWK for  the group’s public protest.  Other white supremacists soon joined in.  On March 10, the National Socialist Movement (NSM), a neo-Nazi group based in Detroit, Michigan, announced that NSM leader Jeff Schoep would speak at the Memphis event.  NSM members from Texas, South Carolina and Georgia also plan to attend. The Northern Mississippi White Knights of the Ku Klux Klan, the Arkansas-based International Keystone Knights of the Ku Klux Klan, and the Louisiana-based neo-Nazi group Aryan Nations have all also claimed that members would attend.

Texas Police Shoot White Supremacist From Colorado

A member of the 211 Crew, a Colorado-based racist prison gang, was shot and mortally wounded by police on March 21.  Police shot Evan Spencer Ebel, 28, of Denver, Colorado, following a high-speed chase and shootout.

The incident began in Montague County, Texas, when Deputy James Boyd was allegedly shot by Ebel, twice in the chest and once in the ear, during a routine traffic stop.  Boyd, who was wearing body armor, suffered non-life-threatening injuries.

Members from multiple law enforcement agencies pursued Ebel, who allegedly fired his gun out the window as he led police on a high-speed chase until he crashed into a semi-trailer truck on Highway U.S. 380 in Decatur.  According to police, Ebel exited his vehicle after the crash and opened fire on police who returned fire, mortally wounding Ebel.

Ebel, a parolee from the Colorado Department of Corrections, has a criminal history dating back to 2003 when he was convicted of robbery.  He was also convicted of assaulting a prison guard in 2008.  Currently, authorities are investigating Ebel’s possible connection to two El Paso County, Colorado, murders which occurred earlier this week, including that of Department of Corrections Director Tom Clements.

Ebel is the second 211 Crew member killed by police in just over a year.  In February 2012, Jeremiah Barnum of Englewood, Colorado, was shot and killed by police after he allegedly ignored an officer’s orders to stop, and instead reached for a gun in his waistband.  Barnum, who was a high ranking member of 211 Crew, was convicted in 1999 of being an accessory after the fact to the race-based murder of a West African immigrant in Denver.

211 Crew Tattoo

The 211 Crew, named after the California penal code for robbery, also known as the Aryan Alliance, was started in the Denver County Jail in 1995 by Benjamin Davis.  In 2007, Davis was convicted of operating a criminal enterprise from prison that sold drugs and ordered attacks on inmates and others outside prison.

The gang consists of several hundred members who are recruited in prison, but continue their criminal activities after their release, including attempted murder, assault, robbery, racketeering, bribery, witness tampering, and drug distribution.  As with most racist prison gangs, any white supremacist ideology they might have is secondary to their organized crime or criminal enterprise motives.

This shooting, the second this month, is a continuation of a string of at least 30 shootouts between police and domestic extremist in the United States since 2009.  Earlier this month police fatally shot anti-government extremist Jeffery Allen Wright following a four-hour standoff in Florida.
