Recent Controversies in Egypt Illustrate Anti-Israel Sentiment Still Prevalent

Recent controversies in Egypt illustrate the prevalence of anti-Israel sentiment in a country which has had a peace agreement with Israel since 1979.

The latest incident involved a dinner invitation by Egyptian Parliamentarian Tawfiq Okasha to Israeli Ambassador Haim Koren. Okasha, a TV personality who has a history of making anti-Semitic remarks on his show, was subsequently ousted from Egypt’s Parliament after being accused of engaging in normalization efforts towards Israel. He was also physically attacked byanother Parliamentarian, Kamal Ahmad, who hurled his shoe at Okasha in protest. In a video, Ahmad explained that his action was intended not only toward Okasha, but also toward the Knesset and the “Zionist Entity.” The Al-Yawm As-Sabi news site hosts a video game where players can use a shoe to hit Okasha across the face.…

Outpouring of Anti-Israel Tweets After NBA Coach David Blatt Fired

After the firing of the NBA’s Cleveland Cavaliers head coach David Blatt, some social media users responded by posting vehemently anti-Israel, and some anti-Jewish, personal attacks against Blatt, who holds both Israeli and American citizenship.

Hostile verbal attacks on individuals for being Israeli citizens or supporters of Israel appear to have become more commonplace in recent years both online and offline as well as some look to demonize the Jewish state in any way possible.

Below are just a few examples from the dozens of social media posts personally attacking Blatt regarding his citizenship or religious identity rather than discussing his abilities as a coach:

Iran’s New Anti-Israel Slogan Recycles Old Hate

“Israel will be destroyed within 25 years” appears to be the new mantra promoted by Iran’s propaganda machine ahead of Iran’s “National Day to Fight Global Arrogance” on November 4. It marks the anniversary of the takeover of the US embassy in Tehran by the Iranian students in 1979.

Posters to promote the slogan, circulated recently by institutions affiliated with the Iranian government, demonstrate an effort to popularize the motto as its new anti-Israel slogan. The words echo a statement by Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, which prophesized the destruction of Israel within the next 25 years.…
