Gun Advocates Continue To Misappropriate The Holocaust

The heated political debate over gun control continues to be tainted by the inappropriate use of Holocaust imagery by some gun advocates.nugent-weinstein-gun-control-hitler-nazi

One such analogy suggests that those who support stronger gun control are akin to Hitler or other Nazi figures. Most recently, rock musician and gun advocate Ted Nugent compared film producer Harvey Weinstein to a Nazi propagandist, stating that those who watch Weinstein’s planned film about the National Rifle Association (NRA) “will see that Joseph Goebbels and Saul Alinsky is [sic] alive in the form of a fat punk named Harvey Weinstein, and as he tries to destroy the NRA, it will backfire on him.” He also said that “you have to be brain-dead to believe that the gun-free zones of Chicago and Nuremberg in 1938 are a desirable condition.”

Another historically inaccurate analogy suggests that if those who perished under the Nazis had better access to guns, the regime would not have been able to systematically murder so many Jews and others. For example, in response to Jersey City Mayor Steven Fulop’s efforts to improve gun safety in December 2013, NRA board member Scott Bach said, “…if you’re going to be a Jersey City mayor you have to by default be anti-gun…His grandparents were Holocaust survivors according to Wikipedia. So you’ve got to wonder why he is not getting it.”

It must be noted that the small number of personal firearms in the hands of the small number of Germany’s Jews (about 214,000) remaining in Germany in 1938 could in no way have stopped the totalitarian power of the Nazi German state. When they had weapons, Jews could symbolically resist, as they did in the 1943 Warsaw Uprising and elsewhere, but could not stop the Nazi genocide machine. Gun control did not cause the Holocaust; Nazism and anti-Semitism did.

Invoking offensive Holocaust analogies in discussions of controversial issues is nothing new. Such comparisons have been used by both Democrats and Republicans on a number of issues, and by numerous public figures when discussing topics ranging from abortion to animal rights to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict to LGBT rights. A spike in offensive Holocaust analogies also followed the Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting.

You want to know what is sad. People coming in against gun rights as we find in the Constitution. My family left Europe in and migrated from Germany and Denmark from 1929 to 1934 prior to Nazi control. I am a retired Law Enforcement officer and know very well citizens that have proper protection such as firearms along with training on how to use them are less likely to be victims of violent crime. This is supported by prior studies done by the FBI, ATF, and the Justice Department. Besides I am a Messianic Jew, a Constitutionalist , and will defend this country against any Liberal Socialist style Government. I have always been an advocate of ADL until now. especially with my Law Enforcement background. I have met elderly people that are still alive that survived the Holocaust and everyone of them have told me not to give up my guns at any cost. You can remove me from your mailing list.

    This is a difficult topic.

Were I a Jew in Nazi times, an East Timorese a little while back, a Rewandan, or a Sudanese, or living in the CAR right now I’d prefer a weapon to a plea for mercy.

I do not think a jackbooted SS trooper would be as confident of rounding up Jews if a few fired on him. The genocidal result may not have been changed but there would have been a lot less Nazis in the process.

In my profession I know what guns can do, to the innocent and the guilty. I do not like what weapons can do to the human body, nor do I like total helplessness.

I do not support registration. Like a driving license, passing the exam does not obligate one to possess either an auto nor a gun. This takes the wind out of the NRA*s sails regarding tracing and confiscation.

The NRA wants military weapons, I support hunting and small personal ones only and only after a rigorous safety exam. A very strict punishment for possession or use without the exam and permit would more nearly ensure a safe owner vs just anyone with a few bucks and connections.

That’s the evilness of the “argumentum ad nazium”. That’s why most of us detest it: it does trivialize the tragedy and horror represented by the Third Reich.

    Above
and beyond the NRA-perpetuated fantasy, the entire idea of the Nazi’s
using gun control to subvert the population is a MYTH. The Nazi’s
actively *armed* huge sections of their civilian population and were
under little to no threat of any civilian insurrection until well into
the war. Party members in particular were entirely exempt from gun
regulations of any kind and, more over, the only group that really got
the full brunt of any sort of “Nazi Gun Control” was THE JEWS.

    Shocking, I know.

    Anyone
who cites Hitler as an example of why gun control is bad is an idiot
with a 3rd graders understanding of History and should automatically be
barred from public conversation until such point they are cable of
joining the rest of us at the grown-ups’ table.

I read about how Nazi Germany issued laws not allowing Jews to own guns. If that ever happened here we now know the result. As a Jew I prefer to have the right to own a gun. History can’t repeat itself if we keep our guns. There is logic to our constitution.
