The Jeddah International Book Fair in Saudi Arabia, which hosts more than 350 publishing houses from 21 countries, appears to feature anti-Semitic books for sale.

The book fair, taking place December 12-22, includes on its “Book Lists” works such as My Awakening: The Jewish Influence in the United States by the notorious anti-Semite David Duke. Duke’s book, classified as “Political Science” on the list from the Dar Alfiker Al Mua’sir publishing house in Lebanon, is listed for SAR53 (US$14).

Adolph Hitler’s Mein Kampf, which served as a blueprint for the extermination of six million Jews and millions of others in the Holocaust, is listed to be sold at the book fair for SAR45 (US$12). Classified as “History,” Mein Kampf, is on the list from Ibn Al Nafees publishing house in Egypt. A book titled Free Masons, The Jews and The Torahby Dr. Noman Al Samarayi, which promotes conspiratorial theories about a Jewish role in dominating the world, was listed for sale for SR8 (US$2).

The Jeddah Governorate, the Saudi Ministry of Culture, and a number of private sector corporations co-organized the book fair, which attracted more than 150,000visitors in its first three days according to the fair website.

Unfortunately, selling anti-Semitic books at book fairs in the Middle East is an ongoing problem. For example, another book fair in the region, the Doha International Book Fair in Qatar, which ended on December 12, also included anti-Semitic titles, such as the Arabic-language anti-Semitic Jewish Encyclopedia.

Featuring anti-Semitic titles in the right context may at times serve to expose their vicious nature. However, it is clear that in the case of the Jeddah Book Fair and several other book fairs in the region, such books are displayed to readers who may not be aware of the bigoted agenda behind such books. Including editorial language or contextualizing the books appropriately as hateful material is extremely important.

Over the past few years, ADL has documented the availability of similar problematic books at several book fairs in the region. Below are few examples:

Moroccan Group Stands Against Anti-Semitism At Pro-Palestinian Rally

A group calling themselves “Moroccan citizens united against incitement to kill Jews in Morocco” organized a petition to protest the anti-Semitic message of the “Al-Aqsa Intifada march,” a pro-Palestinian rally held on October 25, in the Moroccan city of Casablanca.

The pro-Palestinian rally drew international media attention for featuring men dressed as Orthodox Jews being led at gunpoint by masked men wearing keffiyehs.

Reportedly, the petition against anti-Semitism stated, “Even though it is of course every citizen’s right to publicly manifest their support for a cause that they consider just, it is obviously illegal to call for someone’s death because of their religious beliefs. ” The petition also noted that scenes from the protest are spreading fear among the Jewish community in Morocco and across the world. It reads in part, “Such anti-Semitic acts are a threat to the security and the safety of Moroccan Jews and a threat to [the principles of] co-existence in the country. It is also against values of pluralism and tolerance which are enforced by the supreme law of the Kingdom, which recognizes the Hebrew component as an essential part of the Moroccan identity.”

According to local Moroccan news sources, more than three thousand Moroccans already signed the petition, which called upon the Ministers of Interior and Justice to bring their attention to the rally, and hold accountable those responsible for its anti-Semitic scenes.

Mouna Izddine, a spokesperson for the group, which organized the petition, told a Moroccan newspaper, “The images reported by media outlets challenge the type of social example we are trying to provide for our children. As Moroccans, regardless of our faith, we want to live in peace and harmony.”

The violent anti-Semitic message of the pro-Palestinian march in Casablanca raised concern as well for the safety of the Jewish community in Morocco. Jews in Morocco have a rich history dating back thousands of years. They have enjoyed great support from the royal family, and Moroccan society has traditionally been relatively accepting of the Moroccan Jewish community.

The petition organizers provide a valuable learning opportunity about tolerance and the fight against anti-Semitism. By standing up against expressions of hate that target fellow Jews, under the guise of supporting Palestinians, those Moroccans who signed the petition send a clear message not only to their fellow Moroccan Jews but also to the world at large. Their message is loud and clear; voices of reason cannot be silent in the face of hate.

Instructional Content On How To Stab Jews Spreads On Social Media

Update – 10/20/15: After alerting Google, Facebook and Twitter to the problematic material cited in this blog post, all the items have been removed by those services in a prompt manner.

As violence escalates in Israel, content has emerged across social media platforms—including YouTube, Facebook, and Twitter—not only urging people to stab Jews, but providing instructional information on how to stab people and which knives to use.

The following is a sampling of Arabic-language posts ADL has identified in the past several days specifically providing information about how to stab victims. While such content is available is many languages, the Arabic language content seems geared toward Arabic speakers in Israel.

The Anti-Defamation League (ADL) is alerting various social media companies about this content. ADL continues to work with the industry to improve policies and protocols for the removal of content that triggers violence or promotes bigotry, content that is contrary to the companies’ terms of service.

ADL continues to encourage the public to report such content. ADL Cyber-Safety Action Guide provides quick and easy access to company policies and complaint forms.

  • A video featuring two masked men demonstrating several stabbing techniques is available on several YouTube channels. The video, posted on October 5, is listed under several titles, including “Learn how to stab a Jew.” The video is also circulating on Facebook and Twitter.YouTube stab image
  • A number of Twitter users started posting a graphic last week describing what type of knife should be used for stabbing attacks in Israel. The image includes the following instructions: “Circulate: Regarding the Youth in the occupied lands, they must use serrated knives in stabbing so the air can enter the body of the target, which leads to immediate death, and the destruction of organs when the knife is pulled.”

  • Several Twitter users recommend attaching a camera to the knife to record the stabbing in HD. For example, the tweet below from October 5 includes an image of a GoPro camera attached to a knife and hashtags that translate to  “West Bank is uprising” “Stab a soldier with a knife to liberate Palestine” and  “Intifada started.”Twitter 3 stab image
