Adam Gadahn Issues New Video Threatening the U.S

Adam Gadahn, an American English-language spokesperson for Al Qaeda, has released a new video calling for attacks against the U.S.gadahn-egypt-video

The video, produced by As-Sahab media, the media wing of Al Qaeda’s central organization, is primarily directed at Egyptian youth, denouncing the current regime and calling for the imposition of Islamist governance. Although the video was in Arabic, it was produced with English subtitles.

The central portion of the video shifted focus to the U.S. Against footage of the September 11, 2001 attacks, Gadahn stated that the “coup in Egypt has confirmed the need to confront America…. It is essential to fight America. It is essential for every youth in Egypt to strive to emulate the martyred champion Muhammad Atta (among the 9/11 hijackers) and his magnificent companions, who sold themselves cheaply to Allah for their Ummah’s freedom, honor, and future. It is essential to wage Jihad against America and inflict slaughter on it…”

Gadahn also used the video to place blame for the coup that installed the current military government and “crimes against Islam and Muslims” on “the Jews and the crusaders.”  This follows a common theme of including anti-Semitic tropes in Al Qaeda propaganda.

Some indicative quotes include:

  • “This criminal Pharoanic clique [the current government] is nothing but the protector of the Jews and the agent of the western crusaders which lives on their handouts and bribes.”
  • “Power, force, arms, ammunition and leadership of armies must be in trustworthy Muslim hands not in the hands of the secular officers and hypocritical kigns and emirs who are the friends of the West and protectors of the Jews.”

Concluding footage in the video also included clips of the Boston Marathon bombing, fighting in Syria, and terrorism in Israel, including a brief video clip of Jews praying at the Western Wall, Judaism’s holiest site, followed by footage of an explosion.

Adam Gadahn has a long history of using online media to call for attacks on the U.S. In 2011, for example, he was featured in a video saying that, “Muslims in the West have to remember that they are perfectly placed to play an important and decisive part in the jihad against the Zionists and Crusaders and to do major damage to the enemies of Islam.”

This video adds to the proliferation of online media that frames Al Qaeda’s narrative in English for international consumption, encouraging international radicalization.

9/11 Conspiracy Cited In New Call To Hack Israeli Websites

A video message posted online on September 10th threatened to launch a hacking operation against Israel on 9/11 under the name “OpIsrael Reborn.”Myths Hackers Team for blog

The video, which starts off by calling for the operation against Israel,  shows footage of the World Trade Center attack, Osama bin Laden, the Abu Ghraib prison in Iraq and other scenes from U.S. military operations. The hackers claim that Israel and the U.S. are the real terrorists and imply that Israel was responsible for 9/11, a widely circulated conspiracy theory that has been propagated by left and right-wing extremists in the dozen years since the 2001 attack. Other written statements that appear in the video refer to the 9/11 attacks as a lie and claim that Israel does not exist, “it is Palestine.”

The video was released by an Egypt-based hacker group called “Myths Hackers Team.” Several other international hacking groups called for similar attacks against Israel on 9/11 but based on Israeli media reports thus far, none of these efforts were particularly successful.

In the video, Myths Hackers Team also claimed responsibility for an April hacking operation against Israel.

The group  has an Islamist bent and is sympathetic to the Muslim Brotherhood in Egypt, as illustrated by various posts on its Facebook page. It claims that it has successfully hacked more than 200 Israeli websites, including the websites of military agencies. One post on the Facebook page reads: “We will not stop, we will not forgive, we will not forget… it’s only the beginning, what is coming is more. We promised to start the war and it will not end until we announce that we are finished.”

The first “OpIsrael” hacking incident took place during Israel’s Operation Pillar of Defense in Gaza last November, when hackers targeted, and in some cases defaced, various Israeli websites. A similar hacking operation timed to coincide with Holocaust Remembrance Day in April of this year was dubbed “OpIsrael2.”

Past cyber-attacks against Israeli and Jewish institutions have been labeled by some Islamist activists as “electronic jihad.” ADL has previously issued numerous reports about anti-Semitic 9/11-related conspiracy theories, warning that “allegations of Jewish culpability in the 9/11 attacks may even be used as justification for future acts of anti-Semitic violence.”

The One Million Muslim March On 9/11

million-muslim-march-september-11

Rabbi Alam and Brigitte Gabriel appear on Sean Hannity program

The American Muslim Political Action (AMPAC), an organization with a relatively insignificant presence among American Muslims, created a strong media reaction by announcing its intention to organize a “One Million Muslim March” to the U.S. Capitol on September 11, 2013. AMPAC was founded and is run by Mr. Rabbi Alam (“Rabbi” is his first name), an American war veteran originally from Bangladesh with a past record of making controversial and bigoted statements.

Several US media outlets and activists have highlighted some of Alam’s past anti-Semitic and conspiratorial remarks implying Jewish involvement in the 9/11 attacks. For example, in 2009 Alam posted a comment on Topix, a web-based forum, on the discussion topic “Was 9/11 a conspiracy?” He wrote “a big yes from my own understanding.” In the same post, Alam questioned why 9/11 was an “official holidy for all jewish people [who] worked in the WTC [sic]” and added “who can tell me how many of the Jewish people died on the 9/11 tragedy? [sic].”

AMPAC’s website also states, “The history of the Jewish-Zionist lobby AIPAC shows that it is more effective to be ‘radical’ and express one’s views strongly and honestly, than to be fearful and timid. The best defense is a good offense.”

Alam recently appeared on Fox News with Brigitte Gabriel, leader of  Act! for America, to discuss the march with Sean Hannity. The interview called into question his ability to organize a large event, and underscored his willingness to stir controversy. By his statements, he made it readily apparent why some anti-Muslim groups would find him a convenient example to cite in promoting their agenda.

To date, there is little evidence of support for the march from American Muslims.
