Press TV Exploits Iran Deal To Promote Anti-Semitism

Press TV, Iran’s government-run English-language news network, is exploiting the international discussion about the Iran nuclear deal to promote anti-Semitic stereotypes of Jews and Israel as war-mongering and exercising nefarious control over the American government to act against the country’s interests.

Press TV has a long record of promoting pernicious anti-Semitic conspiracy theories as “news” to a worldwide audience. Operated by Islamic Republic of Iran Broadcasting (IRIB), Press TV serves as a mouthpiece for American anti-Semites, conspiracy theorists, and Holocaust deniers, who are presented as credible experts that help amplify the Iranian regime’s hateful messages.

Some examples of the types of anti-Semitic conspiracy theories recently broadcast on Press TV regarding the Iran deal include:

  • “AIPAC critics have said it acts as an agent of the Israeli regime and has a ‘stranglehold’ on Congress with its extensive influence and financial power.”

(Scott Bennet, “Americans tired of Israel lobby and Netanyahu: Ex-US army psychological warfare officer,” August 1, 2015)

  • “Israel has done everything in its power for decades to make sure that the West and the Islamic world are at odds with each other, are at loggerheads, are fighting and squabbling against each other so that Israel can rule the roost and carve out its emporium while everybody else is distracted.”
  • “This obviously reveals to the world that Israel and global Zionism are the primary impediments to world peace and stability, it’s not Iran.”

(Brandon Martinez, “AIPAC trying to torpedo Iran nuclear agreements: Analyst,” July 31, 2015)

  • “The majority of American people are uninformed about the destructive influence of the pro-Israel lobby in the United States and its dominance on US foreign policy.”
  • “It would be nice to see the Americans rise up against the kind of tyranny that does occur because of the Israel lobby.”

(Scott Rickard, “US media, politics hijacked by pro-Israel lobby: Analyst,” July 28, 2015)

  • “The Zionist lobby in the United States is using its tremendous influence in Congress to place Israel’s interest ahead of America’s, including launching more conflicts in the Middle East and trying to derail any nuclear agreement with Iran.”
  •  “They’re nothing but traitors to America, pushing another war for Israel vs. Iran like they did with Iraq.”

(James Morris, “Israeli-occupied US Congress seeks war with Iran: Analyst,” July 22, 2015)

Anti-Semitic Conspiracies Continue In Aftermath Of Paris Attacks

Conspiracy theories blaming Jews and Israel for the terror attack at the Charlie Hebdo office in Paris continue to surface in the U.S. and abroad.

In addition to previously reported examples, recent instances of American anti-Semites exploiting the tragedy to promote hatred for Jews include:

Brandon Martinez's on Press TV

Press TV’s reporting on the attacks

  • Paul Craig Roberts, an anti-Semitic syndicated columnist, wrote an article on his personal website claiming that there are suspicions “that the French shootings are a false flag operation.” Roberts identified several reasons for this, including “to stifle the growing European sympathy for the Palestinians and to realign Europe with Israel.”
  • On Press TV, Iran’s English-language satellite news network, in a January 13 article titled “Analyst wonders whether Cahrlie [sic] Hebdo massacre was staged,” Brandon Martinez blamed “Zionists” for a number of the world’s evils. For example, Martinez wrote that Al-Qaeda and ISIS are “all outgrowths of the same poisonous American-Zionist imperial tree.”
  • On January 12, on Veterans Today, a U.S.-based website that presents anti-Semitic conspiracy theories as news, Senior Editor Gordon Duff published an article titled “Did Netanyahu Give France Their 9/11?” In the article, he describes the attacks as a “comic opera of carelessly staged false flag terrorism” carried out by “the Mossad and the criminal banks, part of the pro-Israeli ISIS organization.”

Internationally, similar conspiracy theories have been published in some media outlets and been promoted by various individuals:

Ankara Mayor Melih Gökçek

Ankara Mayor Melih Gökçek blaming Mossad for the attacks

  • Turkey: According to a report from Anadolu News Agency circulating in the Turkish media, Ankara’s Mayor, Melih Gokcek accused Israel of being behind the Paris attacks. He made his statement during a conference by the Justice and Development Party (AK Party) on January 13. He claimed Israel was annoyed with the lower house of the French Parliament for voting for the recognition of a Palestinian state and with France’s vote in favor of a United Nations Security Council (UNSC) resolution calling for the same recognition. “Israel certainly doesn’t want this sentiment to expand in Europe. That is why it is certain that Mossad is behind these kinds of incidents. Mossad inflames Islamophobia by causing such incidents,” Gokcek said.
  • Egypt: A foreign affairs analyst at Al Wafd daily newspaper was cited in a report by the paper on January 12 as stating: “The Israeli Mossad is behind the terrorist attack against Charlie Hebdo French newspaper.” He added, “The Mossad planned the operation, and provided the attackers with weapons, and most likely the planning of the operation was done in the same Jewish [grocery] store which the attackers went to later.”
  • Egypt: Mohammed Tewfik, a journalist and former member of the militant al-Gama’a al-Islamiyya, accused the Mossad of being involved in the Charlie Hebdo attacks. His accusations were included in a statement published by the Egypt-based Albawabh news website, on January 12. Tewfik stated, “The fast reaction by Israel to the attack, and Netanyahu’s trip to France, his request for France’s Jews to immigrate to Israel, and his call to  establish a new international coalition against Islamic terrorism, are likely [indications] of a Mossad involvement in this crime and an attempt to stick it to the Muslims.”

Anti-Semites have promoted such absurd theories to explain events in Syria, the Boston Marathon bombing, the Sandy Hook Massacre, and the 9/11 terrorist attacks. In the Middle East, there are those that claim that ISIS and the Muslim Brotherhood have secret alliances with the Jews or that the Jews created such terrorist groups for nefarious purposes.

Iran Press TV Provides Platform To Emerging Anti-Semitic Voices

Iran’s English-language satellite news network, Press TV, which provides a platform for some of the most well-known anti-Semites, conspiracy theorists and Holocaust deniers in the U.S., also enables lesser known anti-Semites to gain exposure for their

Brandon Martinez, a Canada-based freelance writer who promotes Holocaust denial and anti-Semitic conspiracy theories, is among the latest fringe voices to be published by Press TV.

Martinez’s article, published on February 24, 2014, and titled, “Zionist exceptionalism, fears WW2 truth,” is steeped with anti-Semitic claims and blatant Holocaust denial. In his article, Martinez describes the Nazi death camp Auschwitz as a pleasant place where Jews were encouraged to join in activities, such as playing in the orchestra or participating in “other cultural and leisure activities.”

Martinez not only denies the number of Jews who fell victim to Nazi atrocities during World War II, but also denies the existence of gas chambers and the use of Zyklon B in the mass extermination of Europe’s Jewish population. To back up these claims, Martinez cites Holocaust deniers Mark Webber and David Irving.

Following the U.S. temporary waiver of sanctions on broadcasts by Iran’s broadcasting authority which broadcasts Press TV, this blatantly anti-Semitic content is once again more available to audiences in the U.S.

According to a biography provided on Press TV’s website, Martinez writes on Zionism, foreign policy and “deception in media and politics.” Press TV has published Martinez’s articles on its website since November 2013 when it published his first piece on Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper’s visit to Israel. In that article, Martinez describes Israel as a rogue regime “Born out of terrorism and ethnic cleansing,” and describes Prime Minister Harper as “being subservience to Israel.”

Martinez’s articles are also found on his personal blog, The Thoughts and Writings of Brandon Martinez, as well as on conspiratorial anti-Semitic websites like Veterans Today, and its affiliated site Veterans News Now.

Below are some examples from Martinez’s articles that have appeared on Press TV and other anti-Semitic websites:

  • February 16, 2014:  In an article titled “Scrutinizing Israel role in 2001 anthrax attacks,” Martinez claims that the anthrax attacks immediately following the 9/11 terrorist bombings originated from Israel’s biological and chemical industry, and implied the existence of a nefarious collaboration between the Israel and the Bush administration to carry out the attacks. Martinez also claims that the Israelis placed the blame for the anthrax attacks on its Arab enemies as a pretext to force the U.S. to go to war against Iraq.
  • January 26, 2014: In an article titled “Israeli militarism predicated on 9/11 deception,” Martinez claims that Israel has a history of conducting false flag operations and that the 9/11 attack was Israel’s “grandest deception.”
  • January 13, 2014: In an article titled “Zionist perversion of history threatens world peace,” Martinez promotes the age-old anti-Semitic conspiracy of Zionist control over Hollywood. Zionist control of Hollywood, Martinez alleges, is why Hitler is depicted as a “villainous demon,” while in reality, “Zionist Jews themselves were Hitler’s most enthusiastic collaborators.” Elsewhere in the article, Martinez calls the Holocaust and the number of Jewish victims a “myth” and part of “Zionist propaganda.”

Extremists like anti-Semite David Duke, anti-Semitic columnist Kevin Barrett and Holocaust denying book publisher Michael Santomauro, remain frequent contributors to Press TV’s website and regularly featured on the network’s programs.
