Anti-Semite Claims Prominent BDS Activist Invited Him To Berkeley Conference

Anti-Semitic conspiracy theorist Kevin Barrett claims he was accepted to present a paper at the 3rd Islamophobia and Civil Society Conference in Paris, sponsored by University of California, Berkeley’s Center for Race & Gender.

The conference, which appears to have recently been canceled, was organized by BDS activist and Berkeley professor Hatem Bazian, the Chairman of American Muslims for Palestine (AMP), the leading organization providing anti-Zionist training and education to students and Muslim community organizations in the country.

Barrett, a former University of Wisconsin-Madison instructor, is a frequent contributor to Iran’s English language propaganda news network Press TV and Veterans Today, a U.S.-based website that presents anti-Semitic conspiracy theories as news. Even Barrett himself seems surprised he was accepted to present at Bazian’s conference. On his GoFundMe page, where he has raised $2,175 to fund his trip to Paris, he wrote, “Amazingly, I just had a hard-hitting, truth-telling paper accepted for a mainstream academic conference: The 3rd Islamophobia and Civil Society Conference to be held in Paris December 11th-12th 2015.” Barrett hoped that by presenting at the conference, he could send the message, “Keep our universities open to people who are willing to think taboo thoughts and ask the hard questions!”

In Barrett’s synopsis of the paper he was accepted to present, titled “Taboo on Questioning: Silencing the Muslim Other,” he alludes to his typical anti-Semitic conspiracy theories. In a discussion on whether the January 2015 terror attacks at the Charlie Hebdo office and a kosher supermarket in Paris were “largely fabricated by Western security agencies to mobilize public opinion for a war on Islam,” Barrett examines questions like “What are we to make of Netanyahu’s repeated threats during the run-up to the shootings that if France recognized or sided with Palestine it would be hit by terrorists?”

Trying to blame Jews or Israel for acts of terrorism is nothing new for Barrett. Some recent examples of his anti-Semitic conspiracy theories include:

  • In a November 13 Veterans Today article titled “Another French False Flag?” Barrett states that “Since we now know the Charlie Hebdo attack was a…false flag by the usual suspects (NATO hardliners and Zionists), can we safely make the same assumption about these new Friday the 13th Paris atrocities? I think we can.” Barrett added “The first question, as always, is: Who gains? And the answer, as always, is: Authoritarian insiders. Zionists. Militarists. Islamophobes. New World Order-Out-Of-Chaos freaks.”
  • In Barrett’s book We Are Not Charlie Hebdo! Free Thinkers Question the French 9/11 he claims that the January Paris attacks were just one in a long history of events – such as the 9/11 attacks and the 2001 anthrax poisonings – perpetrated by Israel in order to “incite hatred of Muslims and solidarity with Israel.”
  • In a January 20 Press TV article titled “Zionist NWO murders Iranian general, American filmmaker,” Barrett claims that “The Zionists created ISIL and sent it to fight Muslims and Christians in Syria and Iraq…New World Order Zionism is also targeting the USA for destruction.”
  • Barrett stated in a February 17 Press TV article titled “9/11 attack was Zionist coup d-etat to seize power in US: Scholar” that “…Zionist pre-emptive murderers excel at ‘killing the future’…A team of Zionist-liked professional killers executed a total of 77 people [2011 attacks in Norway], while Zionist-freemasonic assets in the Norwegian police and military stood by.”
  • In the same February 2015 article Barrett stated that “The September 11, 2001 attacks in the United States were a Zionist ‘coup d’etat’ to seize power in the country and launch a permanent war on Islam on behalf of Israel…”

Calls for Violence against Israel at Annual AMP Conference in Chicago

bannerCalls for violence against Israel were heard at the 7th annual American Muslims for Palestine (AMP) conference, which took place over Thanksgiving weekend at the Hyatt Regency Hotel outside of Chicago. The conference, billed as “Rising from Ashes: Gaza Teaches Life!,”  addressed a number of topics, such as, “Do Occupied People Have the Right to Resist their Occupation?,” “Islamaphobia and Palestine,” and “Capitalizing on the changing American sentiment toward Israeli aggression.”

AMP is the leading organization providing anti-Zionist training and education to students and Muslim community organizations in the U.S and its conference featured a number of U.S. and international anti-Israel activists as guest speakers, including Hatem Bazian, a co-founder of AMP; Josh Rubener, the National Advocacy Director for the US Campaign to End the Israeli Occupation; and Rashid Khalidi, the Edward Said Professor of Modern Arab Studies at Columbia University and an Advisory Board member of the US Campaign to End the Israeli Occupation.

The most extreme comments at the conference came from Taher Herzallah, AMP’s national Campus Coordinator. During his remarks, Herzallah claimed that, “The State of Israel is a lie,” and spoke about how the “Israel lobby” works to ensure that Israel’s legitimacy is not challenged. He also claimed that the focus of anti-Israel groups should be on the younger generation and ended his comments with a call for violence, stating, “Israelis have to be bombed, they are a threat to the legitimacy of Palestine, and it is wrong to maintain the State of Israel. It is an illegitimate creation born from colonialism and racism.”

Mads Gilbert, a Norwegian triage specialist and professor of emergency medicine who recently was banned from entering Gaza by Israel, also supported a call for violence when claiming that the Norwegian people do not support Hamas or Fatah, but that they do “support the fight with arms.” Gilberts, added that the struggle in Gaza is one against racism, apartheid, and political Zionism, and he also spoke positively of rocket fire into Israel, claiming that, “When we heard of each rocket from Gaza [into Israel] that gave us hope and strength.”

One speaker, Sheikh Abdelfattah Mourou, a Tunisian lawyer who founded the Tunisian Islamic Tendency Movement, remarked that Israel was “defending itself by killing innocents” during the most recent round of fighting between Israel and Hamas in Gaza. He also stated that, “When an Israeli pilot kills a family of 25, when he knows the head of Hamas is not home, it is shameful of the whole world to accept this claim of self-defense…The claim of Israeli security is a shameful one.”

Other speakers at the conference discussed the “Israel lobby” and its alleged role in “looking to protect the Zionist narrative.” Israeli anti-Zionist author Miko Peled claimed that the lobby stretches far and that, “There are spheres of Jewish influence here in the U.S., like AIPAC and the Jewish Federation.” Following Peled’s comments, Dima Khalidi, Director of Palestine Solidarity Legal Support and Cooperating Counsel with the Center for Constitutional Rights, stated that, “Jewish Zionists are a powerful force, not just AIPAC.”

Anti-Semite to Appear at MSU’s “Palestine Liberation Week”

Update: Amir Abdul Malik Ali used his platform at UC Irvine to rant about Zionism’s responsibility for the financial collapse, the alleged vilification of Islam and global corruption issues.

The Muslim Student Union at UC Irvine is at it again.

The group has invited Amir Abdul Malik Ali, a virulent anti-Semite, to speak at the university next week. His talk is titled “The Struggle Has No Borders.

Malik Ali’s scheduled appearance is part of a weeklong program being sponsored by MSU next week called “Palestine Liberation Week: Getting to the Root of the Occupation.” Other anti-Israel speakers scheduled to appear include Hatem Bazian and Hedy Epstein. In addition, members of the “Irvine 11, who were suspended for disrupting a speech by Israeli Ambassador Michael Oren in February 2010, will return to campus to take part in the event.

Malik Ali, who is affiliated with the anti-Semitic Sabiqun movement and is the imam of a mosque in Oakland, is regularly invited to speak on campuses in California. During his appearances at Irvine, Malik Ali has conspiratorially claimed that “Zionist Jews” were responsible for 9/11 and that they control the U.S. government, the economy and the media. He has referred to Jews and Zionists as “the new Nazis” and “the party of Satan.” And, during an address titled “Death to Apartheid” in May 2010, Malik Ali responded “yes” to questions about whether he supports Hamas and Hezbollah.

MSU at UC Irvine did not invite Malik Ali to its annual anti-Israel program in 2011, but he had spoken at the program every year before that going back until at least 2006.

News of Malik Ali’s appearance coincides with an article that was published yesterday in The Jewish Daily Forward that describes how Jewish students and Hillels have begun working with chapters of Muslim Student Association and other Muslim student groups on campus. A representative of the Hillel chapter responsible for UC Irvine was quoted in the article saying that Jewish students on campus are engaging with their Muslim student counterparts and described it as “a new era.” Unfortunately, MSU’s continued willingness to provide a platform to an anti-Semite suggests otherwise.
