Iranian Media Reflects Khamenei’s Recent Anti-Semitism

khamenei-facebook-holocaust-garaudy

Khamenei’s Facebook post on Holocaust denier Roger Garaudy

Iranian media and the country’s highest political and religious authority, Supreme Leader Ayatollah Khamenei, haven’t let the recent interim agreement on Iran’s nuclear issue diminish the Islamic Republic’s zeal for promoting its deep-seated anti-Semitism and support for Holocaust denial.

Despite President Hassan Rouhani and Foreign Minister Muhammad Javad Zarif’s recent overtures to the West, extreme elements in Iranian media and its leadership continue to express their vitriolic animus toward Israel and Jews in print, on the web and on social media.

A look at recent officially sanctioned cartoons and caricatures found in Iranian press reveal an uptick in the portrayal of Jews and Israeli leaders as insects, monkeys, rats and dogs (see examples below). In Iranian and Islamic cultures, dogs are often considered najis, or religiously impure beings.

In many illustrations, King Abdullah of Saudi Arabia is also shown as an Israeli lackey responsible for the atrocities occurring in neighboring Syria on Israel’s behest.

Iran’s broadcasting and publishing media is under the control of Ayatollah Khamenei and is charged with presenting the regime’s anti-Semitic, anti-Israel and anti-West ideology. In a post published on Khamenei’s Facebook and Twitter pages on December 16, 2013, marking the anniversary of French Holocaust-denier Roger Garaudy’s trial for his 1996 book that referred to the Holocaust the “myth of the six million,” Khamenei lavished praise on Garaudy as a “French #Muslim resistance fighter.”

Recalling an official meeting held in 1998 during Garaudy’s visit to Tehran, Khamenei said “Zionists are just like the #Nazis and display the same #racist behaviors.” Khamenei’s post was accompanied by an image of Garaudy standing alongside images of Holocaust victims, injured Palestinians, and Nazis.

Qatari Book Fair Highlighting UK Partnership Marred By Anti-Semitism

British and Qatari officials tour book fair

The Doha International Book Fair, held in Qatar on December 4–14 and billed as part of “Qatar-UK 2013” — a year of “events to celebrate and develop the partnership between Qatar and the United Kingdom” — featured many anti-Semitic books from several different publishers and available from multiple book sellers.

A statement from the Qatari Minister of Culture on the fair’s website noted that the UK was selected as the “guest of honor.” The fair’s website also included a photo of the British Minister of Culture with his Qatari counterpart visiting the event.

The anti-Semitic Arabic-language books were available at the fair, according to the website, which included a floor index of where visitors could physically purchase the book.

For example, several publishers from Syria, Egypt, Jordan and Lebanon offered different versions of the notorious anti-Semitic forgery The Protocols of the Learned Elders of Zion and sold them at various prices. Another anti-Semitic book titled, The Secrets of the Talmud, Exposing the Jewish Plot to Control the World, was sold for 75.00 Qatari Rials (about 20 US$).

Books promoting Hitler, Holocaust denial and anti-Semitic conspiracy theories were on display in various sections (e.g., The Facts About the Zionist-Nazi Secrete Relations).

According to Qatari media, the British Embassy in Doha and the British Cultural Council helped organize British participation in the fair. The UK helped organize “workshops for families, children and book enthusiasts,” according to the fair website.

The sale of anti-Semitic books is counter to the fair’s mission, as stated on its website, of “raising the cultural and intellectual level of the society.” It also undermines the larger aim of “Qatar-UK 2013,” which seeks to “increase engagement between the people of both countries in the spirit of innovation, openness and learning.”

Just last month, the Sharjah International Book Fair (SIBF) in the United Arab Emirates, which reportedly attracted 1 million visitors from across the region, featured several infamous anti-Semitic books as well.

Denver Conference To Feature Anti-Semitic Conspiracy Theorists

The Muslim Student Association – Persian Speaking Group (MSA-PSG) will hold its 43rd annual conference in Denver, Colorado, which will draw the participation of several anti-Semites, conspiracy theorists and Holocaust deniers.msa-psg-iran-denver

The conference, titled “Awaiting the Savior,” is scheduled for December 26–29 and will include lectures and workshop sessions with the purported aim to discuss “how Islam can help guide us in our awaiting time to be the true supporters of our Imam,” also known as the Mahdi, a messianic figure for Shi’a Muslims.

The MSA-PGA was founded in 1970 by Mostafa Chamron, an Iranian anti-Shah activist when he was a student at the University of California – Berkeley. Chamron subsequently returned to Iran after the 1979 Islamic Revolution and served as defense minister and a member of parliament for the Islamic Republic of Iran.

The organization has a history of inviting anti-Semitic speakers and extremists to its annual conference. Among the list of speakers invited this year, and in previous years, are Muhammad al Asi and Abdul Alim Musa. Al Asi and Musa are frequently invited to speak at anti-Israel events on campus where they engage in anti-Semitic rhetoric during their speeches and lectures. Additionally, both individuals have publicly sworn allegiance to Iran’s supreme leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. Musa is also the leader of Sabiqun, an anti-Semitic Muslim group that advocates for the creation of a global Islamic state.

Anti-Semitic conspiracy theorists Mark Glenn and Mark Dankof are also invited to speak at this year’s event. At the 2012 annual MSA-PSG conference, Dankof made a series of conspiratorial and anti-Semitic claims that Muslims and Christians are under threat by Zionists. Moreover, Dankof made a series of allegations that Jews are in control of American politics, economics and media, and that Jewish conspiracies are behind important U.S. events, such as the assassination of President Kennedy and the 9/11 terrorist attacks.

The organization, which is primarily based in Los Angeles, adheres to the strict principles of Twelver Shi’a Islam and the virulently anti-Semitic and anti-West ideology of the founder of the Islamic Republic, Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini. Contrary to its name, members of the MSA-PSG are not necessarily students. Many members are of Pakistani or South Asian origins who have previously spent time at Iranian seminaries and religious institutions. Previous years’ conferences have primarily been held in Houston and Chicago.

Another scheduled speaker is Hamza Sodagar, an Iranian-born cleric. At the 2010 Muslim Congress (MC) convention, Sodagar made several conspiratorial charges, including one where he alleged Zionist control over U.S. Muslims.
