Anti-Semitic 9/11 Conspiracy Theorists Thrive 15 Years After Attacks

Fifteen years after the 9/11 terrorist attacks in New York and Washington, DC, anti-Semites continue to spread conspiracy theories blaming Jews and Israel for the events of that day. Anti-Semites Christopher Bollyn, Ken O’Keefe, and Kevin Barrett are three such conspiracy theorists who spread the theory that 9/11 was a “false flag” operation by Israel and the Jews to control world events and create wars for their benefit.

Christopher Bollyn

Christopher Bollyn

Christopher Bollyn was one of the earliest promoters of anti-Semitic 9/11 conspiracy theories blaming Jews and Israel for the attacks. He first began writing about the attacks soon after they occurred as a reporter for American Free Press, the anti-Semitic conspiracy oriented newspaper.  Since that time, Bollyn has doubled down on his arguments and promoted the view that the 9/11 attacks were a false flag operation by Israel and Jews which led to the “War on Terror.” He is now in the midst of a 2016 speaking tour across the U.S. at which he promotes these themes.

On his website, Bollyn asserts, “The terror attacks of 9/11 were an Israeli false-flag operation that was designed to be blamed on Arab Muslims for the sake of kick-starting the long-planned Zionist stratagem known as the ‘War on Terror,’ which is really an Israeli war agenda to be fought by the U.S.” Bollyn is not the only anti-Semitic 9/11 “truther” who is speaking to audiences in this country.

Ex-Marine Ken O’Keefe is another virulent anti-Semite who conducted a similar tour this past spring that promoted conspiracy theories about 9/11 and Jews. He ostensibly gave the tour to talk about security issues, but he focused on vilifying Jews and Israel. During the tour O’Keefe appeared in a video on YouTube in which he answers an interviewer’s questions about 9/11.

Ken O'Keefe

In the video, O’Keefe blames Israel and “traitors” in the U.S. government for carrying out the 9/11 attacks. He argues that Jewish neo-conservatives planned a Pearl Harbor-type event so that they and Israel could dominate the world. He describes Jews as “psychopaths” who are trying to carry out a war of aggression that he claims will lead to World War III.

While Bollyn and O’Keefe get their message out through their tours and YouTube, Kevin Barrett, a former professor, has promoted his anti-Semitic conspiracy theories through his blog, online radio show, books and appearances on Press TV, Iran’s English language news network and propaganda machine.  He is also an editor at Veterans Today, an anti-Semitic website. But Barrett has gone beyond the 9/11 attacks to blame “Zionists” and for other events that he considers false flags, such as the terrorist attacks in Paris and in San Bernardino in 2015.

Kevin Barrett

Kevin Barrett

In an article on the Veterans Today site this month, Barrett writes, “The same forces that orchestrated 9/11 – namely, Operation Gladio B [refers to a supposed secret operation to carry out false flag acts and blame them on Muslim extremists] which is essentially a joint NATO-Israeli project – continue to inflict trauma on the American people with their ongoing false flag operations.”

Barrett, who has said he was influenced by Bollyn’s work, has edited a number of books that feature an array of conspiracists and anti-Semites who blame “Zionists” for various terrorist acts that were carried out by Muslim extremists.

The fact that anti-Semites are promoting the idea that Israel and Jews are responsible for the 9/11 terrorist attacks 15 years after the event is not surprising. In 2003, ADL released a report that predicted that an industry would grow around these anti-Semitic conspiracy theories. In 2011, on the tenth anniversary of the 9/11 attacks, ADL released another report that highlighted how anti-Semites are continue to promote these deceitful theories to further their agenda.

Bigots Express Hateful Rhetoric After Orlando Attack

In the wake of the brutal terrorist attack by Omar Mateen that killed 49 members of the LGBT community and wounded 53 others at a gay nightclub in Orlando, communities held vigils across the country to express solidarity with the victims. In marked contrast to the love and support shown by people around the world, haters voiced anti-Muslim and anti-LGBT sentiment and promoted anti-Semitic conspiracy theories in the aftermath of the event.

Not surprisingly, bigots and extremists used the massacre in Orlando to demonize Muslims and Jews and to assert that the LGBT community got what it deserved because of their lifestyle. The sentiments they expressed demonstrate that these haters will exploit any tragedy to promote their ideology.

Anti-Muslim activism

Over the past year, anti-Muslim activism has been on the rise across the United States. The Orlando attack has provided a boost to such hateful sentiment and bigoted rhetoric.

  • Anti-Muslim activist Pamela Geller commented on the Orlando attack on her blog on June 12: “The media is calling it a hate crime. So it’s safe to assume Islam is a hate ideology.”
  • Robert Spencer, director of the anti-Muslim website Jihad Watch, wrote an article on the site about the terrorist who carried out the Orlando attack: “He was a devout adherent of a religion that mandates death for homosexuals, and the son of a man who supports a group that puts gays to death (even as homosexual behavior is rampant in Afghanistan).”
  • A self-claimed ex-terrorist who is now a Christian convert and an extremist anti-Muslim activist, Walid Shoebat, used the Orlando attack as an opportunity to renew his support for calls to ban Muslims from entering the U.S.  He wrote on his official website on June 12, “First of all it is 100% impossible to screen Muslims to weed out the terrorists…. Anyone who thinks that the U.S. or Europe are properly vetting or can vet these terrorists [is] dreaming. They cannot even monitor a few terrorists.”  He concluded his statement: “What more can we do? In a nutshell, all you westerners, unless you completely ban Islam, your’e [sic] screwed.”
  • Over social media platforms, some have cheered what they considered proof that previous calls to ban Muslim immigration to the U.S. were wise and “spot-on,” attacking at the same time what they described as a policy to “import more Muslims.” Other anti-Muslim statements over social media recycled old claims about the inherently violent nature of Islam, and the threat of not using the words “radical Islamic terrorism” in the context of describing such terrorist attacks.

Anti-LGBTQ hatred

While the LGBT and Muslim communities banded together to promote tolerance over hatred, extremists, including two pastors who are close associates, promoted a virulent strain of homophobia. Neo-Nazis also expressed contempt for the LGBT community, with some celebrating the terrorist attack.

  • Steven Anderson, a pastor in Tempe, Arizona, who is known for his hatred of the LGBT community as well as Jews, gave a sermon celebrating the murder of gay people. He said: “The good news is that there’s 50 less pedophiles in this world, because, you know, these homosexuals are a bunch of disgusting perverts and pedophiles.” He asserted that “they should have been killed through the proper channels as in they should have been executed by a righteous government that would have tried them, convicted them, and saw them executed.”
  • Roger Jimenez, a pastor of a church in Sacramento, California and an associate of Anderson’s, voiced similar sentiments. He posed the rhetorical question, “Hey, are you sad that 50 pedophiles were killed today?” He answered, “Um, no. I think that’s great. I think that helps society.” He added that “The tragedy is that more of them didn’t die. The tragedy is—I’m kind of upset that he didn’t finish the job.” He continued, “I wish the government would round them all up, put them against a firing wall, put a firing squad in front of them, and blow their brains out.”
  • On his neo-Nazi website Infostormer, Lee Rogers wrote, “I find your diseased lifestyles disgusting and toxic to the body politic.” He added that if the LGBT community “choses to follow The Don [a reference to Donald Trump]… we will not openly attack you or slaughter you. Your rights to defile our marriage ceremonies and push your agenda will of course be rescinded, and there will no longer be pride parades featuring massive dildos on American streets.”
  • In an early response to the shooting, a poster on the neo-Nazi forum Vanguard News Network said that Mateen “offed 20 of the most degenerate pieces of excrement on the face of the earth, and if he gets virgins in paradise, as far as I’m concerned, he earned them.”
  • Others on social media, in particular Twitter, used the pejorative term “homocaust” to describe the massacre in Orlando.

Anti-Semitic conspiracy theories

Fringe anti-Semitic conspiracy theorists rarely miss an opportunity to exploit tragedies to promote their hatred of Jews, as they did blaming Jews for events ranging from coordinated terror attacks across Paris in November 2015 to the Sandy Hook Elementary School massacre in December 2012 to the 9/11 terrorist attacks.

  • In this latest round of blaming Jews for all that is wrong with the world, David Duke, the former Klan leader, posted a video on YouTube titled “The Orlando Terror and the Dark Side of Diversity.” In this video, Duke invokes anti-Semitic theories about Jewish control and supposedly evil Jewish intentions stating, “…the powerful Jewish organizations have led the push for open borders.” He added, “…the takeover of American elite media, politics, and banking has directly led to the policies of ethnic cleansing in the country our forefathers created and they literally brag about this.” Duke blames the Jews and others for what he describes as the “the ethnic cleansing of America, Europe, and every Western Nation” and calls on “every white nation” to “rise up and defend Western Christian civilization.”
  •  Additionally, Veterans Today, a U.S.-based website that presents anti-Semitic conspiracy theories as news, published a number of articles blaming Israel or Jews for the Orlando shooting:

–In an article titled “MK-Ultra Triple Play in Orlando,” Veterans Today columnist Preston James tries to place the Orlando shooting into a larger Jewish conspiracy. He wrote, “[I]t is reasonable to view this Orlando shooting as a possible joint Mossad/CIA Gladio-style, inside-job, false-flag “triple-play” op designed to help motivate the American masses to collect the guns, accept political correctness and homosexuality as the preferred norm, and to further motivate Americans to support deploying our war machine to fight more wars for Israel and the KM (Rothschild Zionist Banksters).”

–In “Orlando Shooting: Why Israel Availed the Vicious Circle of Terrorism?” Sajjad Shaukat claims that Israel is behind a number of attacks in cooperation with “the Zionist-Israeli-led America” in order to stir up hatred against Muslims. Shaukat writes: “And most probably…Mossad might have arranged this massive shooting…to divert the attention of American public from internal problems, prolonged war on terror etc., and especially to avoid the solution of the Israeli-Palestinian issue.”

Kevin Barrett, an anti-Semitic conspiracy theorist and frequent contributor to Iran’s English language propaganda news network, Press TV, wrote a Veterans Today article titled “Orlando Nighclub Shooting Another False Flag?” In this article, Barrett places Israel at the center of “the long list of false flags that created [the Orlando shooting], claiming that “Zionists have been panicking, fearing that Obama is going to…officially establish the State of Palestine…The usual suspects may have responded with a massive publicity student in Orlando designed to make us forget Muhammad Ali [who Barrett describes as a positive Muslim role model] and make it much harder, if not impossible, for Obama to force the Israelis to withdraw from the territory they stole in 1967.”

  • Some social media users responded by posting vehemently anti-Semitic messages on Twitter, making accusations similar to those of Duke or Veterans Today, either blaming Jews themselves for perpetrating the attacks or Jewish control of a number of sectors in the U.S. for inspiring the attacks.

Nation of Islam Provides Platform For Anti-Semitic 9/11 Truthers

The Nation of Islam (NOI) has published a series of interviews with anti-Semitic 9/11 conspiracy theorists to support Farrakhan’s repeated claim that Jews are to blame for the 9/11 terrorist attacks.

The NOI’s Research Group published the hateful interviews on its website in response to ADL’s article in the Huffington Post Reconciliation Cannot Mean Turning a Blind Eye to Farrakhan’s Anti-Semitism, an answer to Russell Simmons’ The Nation of Islam and the Anti-Defamation League—Now is the Time to Mend Fences.

In “9/11 Expert Responds To ADL Attack On Minister Farrakhan” (March 25), the “expert” the NOI interviewed to back up its hateful conspiracy theories is 9/11 truther and anti-Semite Kevin Barrett. Barrett, a former instructor at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, is a columnist for the anti-Semitic website Veterans Today, where he has blamed Jews for the Charlie Hebdo attack, the creation of ISIS, the 2011 attacks in Norway that killed 77, the 2001 anthrax poisonings, among other things all supposedly perpetrated by Israel in order to “incite hatred of Muslims and solidarity with Israel.”

Statements made by Barrett in this NOI Research Group interview include:

  • “The 9/11 false flag operation was designed to defame Arabs, Palestinians, and Muslims in general, in service to Israel.”
  • “Israel’s Mossad…is the only intelligence agency with the means, motive, and opportunity to pull off 9/11 – a very complex cover-and-deception operation that had to have been overseen by an intelligence agency.”
  • “Jewish Zionists, ranging from hard-line neocons to ‘liberal Zionists’…have led the cover-up of 9/11.”
  • “But Americans would certainly find a way to peacefully put an end to the illegitimate entity [Israel] that not only attacked them on 9/11 but also has stolen trillions of dollars, dragged America into ruinous wars, destroyed our economy, and shredded our Constitution.”

In “Journalist Christopher Bollyn Backs Farrakhan On 9/11: Israel Did It!” (March 29) the NOI presents as an “expert” anti-Semitic conspiracy theorist Christopher Bollyn. Bollyn was one of the earliest promoters of anti-Semitic 9/11 theories blaming Israel and Jews for the attacks and wrote in his 2012 book that “The ‘false flag’ terrorism of 9/11 is a monstrous Jewish-Zionist crime of our time.  The true culprits of this heinous crime are clearly being protected by a gang of like-minded Jewish Zionists in the highest positions of the U.S. government…” He has also written numerous other articles on his website that accuse Jews of controlling the media and government.

Bollyn stated the following to the NOI Research Group:

  • “The best evidence tying Israel to the 9/11 atrocity is the fact that the key people involved in every aspect of the crime and the cover-up are Israelis and Zionists, from A to Z.”
  • “The one-hundred percent consistency of Zionists and Israelis throughout the 9/11 saga provides compelling evidence that the crime is a Zionist/Israeli crime.”
  •  “…the most important thing is that we get the truth to a critical mass of the population…This is the only way we can remove the Zionist criminal cabal that controls our government and media.”

In “Scholar Backs Farrakhan on 9/11 (March 23), the “scholar” the NOI promotes is James Fetzer, one of the co-founders of Scholars for 9/11 Truth, an organization that is composed of academics and others who believe that the U.S. government played a role in the 9/11 attacks. Fetzer is also a columnist for the anti-Semitic website Veterans Today and has written articles in which he promotes anti-Semitic 9/11 conspiracy theories.

Fetzer made the following statements in his interview with the NOI:

  • “The plan appears to have originated in the fertile mind of Benjamin Netanyahu, who wanted to devise a plan to draw the United States into a war with the Arab nations that served as a counter-balance to Israel’s domination of the Middle East.”
  • “9/11 was brought to us compliments of the CIA, the Neo-Cons in the Department of Defense and the Mossad.”
  • “We present proof of Israeli and Zionist involvement from the security at the airports to the World Trade Center…and many others involved in setting the 9/11 stage and carrying it out.”

The idea that Jews are to blame for 9/11 is nothing new for Farrakhan, who told his 2016 Saviours’ Day audience that the “Synagogue of Satan” is to blame for the Iraq War and 9/11. During his 2015 Saviours’ Day remarks, Farrakhan stated, “It is now becoming apparent that there were many Israelis and Zionist Jews in key roles in the 9/11 attacks.” The NOI’s Saviours’ Day provides Farrakhan with an annual platform to display his hatred for Jews.

Despite Farrakhan’s decades-long history of racism and anti-Semitism, Farrakhan continues to receive support from celebrities and elected officials. Farrakhan was also provided with a platform to promote anti-Semitism in Iran in February as a special guest at multiple high-level events, meeting with current and former Iranian government officials.
