Arab Media Outlets Falsely Label 1969 Al-Aqsa Mosque Arsonist as “Jewish”

August 21st marked the 47th anniversary of the arson attack on the Al-Aqsa Mosque compound by Australian Christian fundamentalist Denis Michael Rohan. Rohan said that God had asked him to set fire to the site, saying he would be made a “king of Jerusalem.” The Mosque was seriously damaged by the fire, and Rohan was tried, found insane, and committed to a mental institution. Temple Mount

While it has been well-documented that Rohan was a Christian, some Arab media outlets have described him as Jewish and an Israeli settler, seemingly in an effort to blame Jews for being behind the arson attack.

Here are some examples:

Al-Quds, editorial, August 22, 2016 (Palestinian Authority)

“Yesterday was the 47th anniversary of the crime of the arson of the blessed Al-Aqsa Mosque by Australian Jew Denis Michael (Rohan). He had the audacity to carry out his loathsome act under the cover of the Israeli occupation authorities, in an attempt on their part to try to find out the Palestinian reaction, as well as that of the Arab and Islamic Worlds. This, as a step in a series of subsequent steps over the course of years – no, decades – leading to its destruction and the building of the alleged Temple in its place.”

Filastin, “Arson of Al-Aqsa No. 47”, by Yussuf Rizqa, August 22, 2016 (Gaza)

“Yesterday was the 47th anniversary of Denis Michael’s arson of the Al-Qibli (Chapel) part of the blessed Al-Aqsa Mosque. Denis Michael was a fanatic Australian Jew, who had come from Australia to occupied Palestine with the objective of deliberately setting Al-Aqsa Mosque on fire.”

Al-Masriyun, August 21, 2016 “The Al-Aqsa Fire … the Fire is Still Burning” (Egypt)

“On the morning of August 21st 1969, two years of the occupation of Jerusalem, Australian Jew Michael Denis Rohan set fire to the Qibli Chapel on the Temple Mount…”.

Al-Jazeera, August 21, 2016 (Qatar)

On the section dedicated to The Arab Reality show on Al-Jazeera, it says the following:

“It should be noted that The Arab Reality episode coincided with the 47th anniversary of  the burning of Al-Aqsa Mosque at the hand of an Israeli settler who carried out his act, leaving the successive Israeli governments the task of completing the Judaization of the holy city.”

Violent East Jerusalem Graffiti Suggests Incitement Seeping Into Palestinian Daily Life

Graffiti recently on view in East Jerusalem, including on Salah El-Din street (the area’s main business district), highlights the incitement to violence seeping into the daily lives of hundreds of thousands of Palestinians living in that area. It serves as a reminder of the fragility of the relative calm Jerusalem has enjoyed in recent weeks, having previously been a focal point in the wave of Palestinian terror which began in September of 2015, often referred to as the “Knives Intifada” because of the frequent stabbing attacks. Examples of this hateful graffiti include an image of a hand holding a knife with the Arabic captions “stab”  and “The Jerusalem Intifada,” and an icon of a Palestinian hurling a Molotov cocktail with the caption “resist.”

Other examples include a map of Israel, the West Bank and Gaza with the caption “From the river to the sea”, suggesting that the Palestinian state should stretch from the Mediterranean to the Jordan River, thereby eliminating the State of Israel. Also spray painted are slogans calling for additional acts of Palestinian terror, with graffiti reading “The armed struggle till the liberation/long live the Intifada” and “The Intifada continues till the liberation of the land and the people.”

Arabic-Language Social Media Glorify Tel Aviv Terror Attack

On Wednesday June 8th, two Palestinian terrorists opened fire in the Tel Aviv Sarona market, killing 4 Israelis and wounding another 6. This was the latest in a wave of Palestinian terror attacks against Israel that began in September 2015.

Shortly after the hideous attack, hash tags celebrating and glorifying it appeared on Arabic-language social media, including “The Ramadan Operation”, “The Tel Aviv Operation” and “The Carlo Salvo”, a reference to the Carlo machine gun which was used in the attack.

Cartoons and images circulating on social media referenced the fact that the attack coincided with Ramadan in order to give it religious significance. They suggested the attack was analogous to breaking the Ramadan fast, and used the slogan “We Were their Fast Breaking”  or “They Were Our Fast Breaking” (verbatim translation: “they broke the fast on/against us”).

While it is unclear how widespread these cartoons are, they do highlight a disturbing phenomenon of terrorists and their actions being glorified across social media. Here are a few examples of cartoons posted on Twitter:

Lieberman and Bibi

This cartoon is entitled “The Tel Aviv Operation” shows Israeli PM Netanyahu and Defense Minister Lieberman crying, while Netanyahu is saying that “They fasted and fasted” and Lieberman is responding “And broke the fast on us”.

Bullet

This cartoon shows a traditional Ramadan “Qatayif” dessert for breaking the fast, which is filled with a bullet.

While some more general images didn’t include direct reference to the attack, they were still categorized under the hash tag “The Ramadan Operation”. One such example showed an ultra-orthodox Jew with two rifles pointed to his head, with the caption “Blood=Blood”, “#kill-them”, “Death to settlers”. Another portrayed Israel as the “mother of terrorism”, showing it breastfeeding the Devil.
