ProEnglish Recruits Controversial Signatories for Letter to House and Senate Leadership

The Virginia-based anti-immigrant group ProEnglish, founded by racist John Tanton, recently sent a letter to the leadership of the U.S. House and Senate on the issue of Puerto Rican statehood, which  featured a number of controversial anti-immigrant activists as signatories. The coalition of 21 signatories included John Vinson, of the Virginia-based anti-immigrant group Americans for Immigration Control (AIC), Rick Oltman, formerly of the DC-based anti-immigrant group Federation for American Immigration Reform (FAIR), and Phil Kent, a ProEnglish board member. The letter they signed calls on the House and Senate leadership to “include specific English language requirements in any legislation to admit Puerto Rico as the 51st State.” Voters in Puerto Rico voted on November 6 in favor of becoming a U.S. state, in a non-binding referendum.

Phil Kent is a longtime anti-immigrant activist based in Georgia who once suggested that citizens should be wary of multiculturalism, stating, “What will be the values and ideas of a multicultural America? What will it mean to be white after ‘whiteness’ no longer defines the cultural mainstream?” Kent also spoke at the 2009 Social Contract Press Writers Workshop, a group founded by Tanton. The workshop is held annually and often features racist speakers, including Peter Brimelow, the founder of the anti-immigrant website VDARE.

Rick Oltman, a former FAIR employee, addressed the 1997 conference of the white supremacist group Council of Conservative Citizens (CofCC). When Oltman spoke at an anti-immigrant rally in 1998 in Cullman, Alabama, an ad for the rally published in the Spring 1998 edition of CofCC’s newsletter, the Council Reporter, described Oltman as a “member” of the organization. Oltman also has had six articles published in The Social Contract (TSC), an anti-immigrant journal, published by Tanton’s Social Contract Press.

John Vinson, the president of AIC, also has ties to CofCC.  Like Oltman, Vinson spoke at a CofCC conference (in 1999) and has had many articles published in TSC. In fact, Vinson guest edited the summer 1998 edition of TSC titled, “Europhobia: The Hostility Toward European-Descended Americans.” The issue featured a number of articles written by white supremacists, such as Jared Taylor and Sam Francis.

Panelists at CPAC Attack Multiculturalism

The 2012 Conservative Political Action Conference (CPAC) featured a panel on multiculturalism on February 9, which was hosted by ProEnglish, an organization whose mission is to make English the official language of the United States.

John Tanton, who has expressed racist views and is the architect of the modern anti-immigrant movement, founded ProEnglish and is still on the organization’s board. Robert Vandervoort, the head of ProEnglish, hosted the panel.
One of the main speakers on the panel was Peter Brimelow, who runs the racist Web site VDARE that features the works of white supremacists, anti-Semites and anti-immigrant activists. Brimelow asserted that multiculturalism and bilingualism were examples of “modern political diseases.” He mostly focused on Canada as an example of how bilingualism has destroyed a society but claimed that America could follow the same example if bilingualism was institutionalized in the United States.
Peter Brimelow
Brimelow alleged that kids cannot get a job at MacDonald’s because they can’t speak Spanish – a trend he described as a “ferocious attack on living standards of the American working class…just as immigration policy in general is.” Later, in the Q&A section, Brimelow said that Democrats had given up on “the white working class,” and that this was “treason.”
One of Brimelow’s co-panelists was John Derbyshire, a National Review contributor who straddles the line between the mainstream and the extremist worlds. He has shared the stage with racist speakers at the H.L Mencken Club, a far-right organization. Derbyshire also agreed to speak at the 2010 white supremacist American Renaissance conference, which was later cancelled. At CPAC, Derbyshire warned that “racism will reemerge in a new and more virulent form” because the tension between what the white elite is supposed to think and what it actually thinks about race will reach a breaking point of “cognitive dissonance.”
A surprise guest at the panel was Congressman Steve King (R-IA), who has made a number of virulently anti-immigrant statements over the years. King is trying to pass a bill which will make English the official language of the United States.

Racists and Bigots to Descend on CPAC Conference in Washington, DC

The February 2012 Conservative Political Action Conference (CPAC), an annual event that features a wide variety of speakers from conservative circles, will host a session on “the failure of multiculturalism” that will include racist Peter Brimelow as a speaker. Brimelow runs the racist and anti-immigrant Web site VDARE and has spoken at racist gatherings, including the September 2011 national conference of the National Policy Institute (NPI), a white supremacist think tank, as well as the 2009 Baltimore, Maryland, conference “Preserving Western Civilization.”  He is also a contributing editor of the Web site Alternative Right, which is edited by white supremacist Richard Spencer, who also heads NPI.

Also appearing at this year’s CPAC event are several anti-Muslim bigots and activists, among them the leaders and founders of the anti-Muslim organization Stop Islamization of America (SIOA), Pamela Geller and Robert Spencer. Together with Tea Party nation, SIOA will host a session titled “Islamic Law in America: How the Obama Justice Department is Selling Us Out.” In addition to speeches by Geller and Spencer, the session will include appearances by David Yerushalmi, one of the driving forces behind the anti-Shariah movement.

This is not the first time Geller has appeared at CPAC promoting her anti-Muslim conspiracies. In 2009, Geller attended the conference with radical anti-Muslim Dutch parliamentarian Geert Wilders.
