Introduction page to the Protocols on the SIS website

An Arabic copy of the notorious anti-Semitic forgery The Protocols of the Learned Elders of Zion is available on the Egyptian government’s State Information Service (SIS) website.

The website is described as “Your gateway to Egypt” and is affiliated with the office of the President. “Egypt State Information Service is the nation’s ‎main informational, awareness and public relations agency. The SIS website was launched in 2009 and on 6/9/2012 a decree was issued to transfer the affiliation of (SIS) from the Ministry of Information to the Presidency of the Republic,” a statement on the website reads in part.  It is unclear when this PDF copy of the Protocols was posted to the SIS website

The book is an Arabic translation of the original Protocols by an Egyptian writer, Abbas el-Akkad. The book first appeared in the early 1960s and includes a warning to the reader that the Jews will fight this book anywhere it appears.

The website offers other publications and articles on Egypt’s culture, history and politics organized by sections. The Protocols, however, is available on the website without any classification or editorial language and can be accessed via a direct link or through a traditional search engine.

While anti-Semitism themes are not new in Egypt or to its elected officials, a government website providing access to the Protocols is a troubling reminder of just how steeped these narratives are in Egyptian society.

“Haters of Israel” Facebook Page Surpasses 1 Million “Likes”

The Arabic-language “Haters of Israel” Facebook page, created in 2011 by a group of Egyptians, has attracted over 1,100,000 “likes.” 18–24 year-olds make up the largest demographic.haters-of-israel-facebook

Interestingly, a majority of the posts on the page have little or nothing to do with Israel, a testimony to the fundamental popularity such a title has in much of the Arab world.

The page functions as a popular forum for those who either identify as haters of Israel or who appreciate the wide appeal generated by the page; some use the page to advertise their own pages and profiles.

Many Facebook pages strive to have a fraction of the “likes” this page has generated, but fail to acquire such a massive following. One possible reason is the simplicity of the title and the clear statement it makes about one’s identity. To be associated with such a clear message adds definition to one’s online presence and is desirable regardless of what the content ultimately is.

That is not to say that the page is devoid of anti-Israel and anti-Semitic messages. For example, one user posted a well-known Holocaust photo of corpses loaded onto a truck with a caption that reads, “Guess what is on this cute wagon… Yes, correct, ha ha ha… These are the remains of the Jewish corpses from the Holocaust executed by Hitler the hero.”

“Haters of Israel” is hardly the only page of its kind. Facebook users have created numerous pages glorifying Hitler and demonizing Israel and Jews in multiple languages that have attracted an innumerable amount of “likes.”protocols-elders-zion-facebook

For example, another Arabic language Facebook page is providing chapters of the notorious anti-Semitic forgery, The Protocols of the Learned Elders of Zion. According to the description provided by the Facebook page, its objective is to “Expose the Jewish/ Israeli plan to control and dominate the world through their immoral plan known as ‘The protocols of the Learned Elders of Zion.’”
