CAPS Provides Platform for Anti-Immigrant Extremists

Californians for Population Stabilization (CAPS), a Santa Barbara-based anti-immigrant organization, claims that its mission is to stabilize the population of California and preserve the environment but it actually provides a platform for a number of anti-immigrant extremists. CAPS senior writing fellows Joe Guzzardi and John Vinson have ties to racist groups. In addition, CAPS features columns from anti-immigrant extremist Frosty Wooldridge, also a CAPS senior writing fellow, as well as anti-immigrant activist D. A. King.

John Vinson

John Vinson

Joe Guzzardi, who is also CAPS’s national media director, was an editor and writer at the racist, anti-immigrant website VDARE until 2010. In 2012, he presented at The Social Contract Press (TSCP) Writers Workshop, which often features racist speakers. White supremacist Wayne Lutton runs the Writer’s Workshop and also edits TSCP’s journal, The Social Contract. Racist John Tanton, the architect of the modern anti-immigrant movement, is the founder of TSCP.

John Vinson is the president of the extreme anti-immigrant group American Immigration Control Foundation (AICF). He is also a founding member of the League of the South (LOS), a white Southern nationalist group.. Vinson has been credited with drafting the “Kinism Statement,” a set of guiding principles for a modern white supremacist interpretation of Christianity called “Kinism,” which promotes the idea that whites should live separately from other races. In addition, in 1999, Vinson spoke at a meeting of the white supremacist Council of Conservative Citizens, along with other anti-immigrant extremists.

Frosty Wooldridge, is well-known for his extreme statements about immigrants. His current focus is on Muslim immigration. He has written a multi-part series called “Impregnating America with Muslims,” in the right-wing online publication NewsWithViews from December 2014 through this month. In the series, Wooldridge demonizes Muslims and equates all Muslims with terrorists. In December 2014, he wrote, “In order to be faithful to the Islamic religion, Muslims ultimately must degrade and kill all other people who follow any other religions.” Wooldridge has also given interviews over the last year to anti-Semitic venues, including the American Free Press, a conspiracy-oriented newspaper and “The Jeff Rense Program,” a conspiracy-oriented Internet radio show.

D.A King, the founder of the Georgia-based anti-immigrant group Dustan Inman Society, has a history of making bigoted statements about immigrants and of working with the more extreme elements of the anti-immigrant movement. For a number of years, King wrote articles for VDARE. In 2007, he reportedly claimed that undocumented immigrants are “not here to mow your lawn—they’re here to blow up your buildings and kill your children, and you and me.” This past summer, in response to the children seeking refuge in the U.S after fleeing from violence in Central America, he asserted that the children were “swarming the border and bringing disease.” In addition, King has been a contributor to The Social Contract.

Anti-Immigrant Group Exploits MLK to Rail Against Immigration Reform

Californians for Population Stabilization (CAPS), a Santa Barbara-based anti-immigrant group, launched a TV ad campaign that manipulates Martin Luther King, Jr.’s words in order to rail against President Obama’s executive action on immigration. The Santa Barbara-based group began airing the ads on January 13 on national cable networks and local TV stations in Los Angeles.

Joe Guzzardi

Joe Guzzardi

In the press release announcing the 2015 ads, Joe Guzzardi, CAPS national media director, claims that President Obama’s policies disproportionately harm minority Americans. Guzzardi’s expressed concern for minorities is questionable. Guzzardi was an editor and writer at the racist, anti-immigrant website VDARE until 2010. In addition, in 2012, Guzzardi presented at The Social Contract Press (TSCP) Writers Workshop, which often features racist speakers. Racist John Tanton, the architect of the modern anti-immigrant movement founded TSCP and white supremacist Wayne Lutton edits TSCP’s journal, The Social Contract. In addition, CAPS appointed another racist, John Vinson, as a senior writing fellow in 2013.

The CAPS ads imply that President Obama’s efforts to provide some undocumented immigrants with work permits runs counter to Dr. King’s vision of racial equality in America. In reality, CAPS is exploiting the occasion of King’s birthday to promote intolerance towards immigrants who work and live in this country. The ads stress that undocumented immigrants are taking away jobs from African-Americans and Hispanics in the United States. CAPS ran similar ads around Martin Luther King Day last year, as well.

Since 2013, CAPS has gone beyond promoting its anti-immigrant agenda in California and has moved on to the national stage. It has been one of the most active organizations attempting to derail immigration reform. In addition to ads mentioned earlier, the group has run ads targeting politicians for their support of immigration reform.

Anti-Immigrant Think Tank Appoints Bay Buchanan To Board

bay buchananThe Center for Immigration Studies (CIS), an anti-immigrant think tank founded by racist John Tanton, recently appointed Bay Buchanan, an anti-immigrant figure with ties to extremists, to its board of directors.

Buchanan is the president of The American Cause, a group founded by her brother, Pat Buchanan, a racist and anti-Semite. Though the organization is currently dormant, it hosted a number of anti-immigrant gatherings in the past featuring racist speakers.

For example, in January 2009 the organization held an event when it released a report on the impact of candidates’ views on immigration during the 2008 election. Panelists included Bay Buchanan, Peter Brimelow, a white supremacist and founder of the racist anti-immigrant website VDARE, and Marcus Epstein, founder of the now-defunct far-right Robert Taft Club. The Taft Club often invited racist speakers to address its gatherings, including white supremacist Jared Taylor, founder of The New Century Foundation, a self –styled think tank known primarily for American Renaissance , a white supremacist journal and companion website.

After Marcus Epstein was arrested and pleaded guilty to simple assault for attacking an African American woman in Washington, D.C., Buchanan defended him in a column published by VDARE titled “The Internet Lynching of Marcus Epstein.” Buchanan also contributed an article to The Social Contract (TSC) an anti-immigrant journal edited by white supremacist Wayne Lutton. At the 2011 Conservative Political Action Conference (CPAC), Buchanan spoke on a panel sponsored by the now-defunct racist student group Youth for Western Civilization (YWC) titled “Will Immigration Kill the GOP?”  Kevin DeAnna, the founder of YWC, was also on the panel. In 2005, Buchanan was a guest on the racist radio program The Political Cesspool, hosted by white supremacist James Edwards.

Buchanan also served as chair for her brother’s three presidential campaigns and in 2008, was a senior advisor to former Colorado congressman Tom Tancredo, who is known for his anti-immigrant and anti-Muslim rhetoric.  Buchanan also ran the now-defunct Team America Political Action Committee (PAC) founded by Tancredo.
