Traditionalist Youth Network Plans “Koran Barbeque” On September 11

Update: The Traditionalist Youth Network will not burn the Qur’an on September 11.  Instead, the group plans to hold an  event supporting Syria’s President Assad.

The Traditionalist Youth Network (TYN), a small youth group  founded by white supremacists Matt Parrott and Matthew Heimbach, announced plans to hold a “Koran Barbecue” event on September 11 in Central Michigan. Participants reportedly plan to burn Qur’ans and eat pork to demonstrate their anti-Muslim hatred. traditionalist-youth-network

The serving of pork at the barbecue is an example of the TYN copying the tactics of the French far-right political party Bloc Identitaire (BI). BI focuses on taking direct action to intimidate the Muslim community; for example BI hosts barbeques in predominately Muslim areas of French cities where the group serves pork and wine, both forbidden in the Islamic faith.  TYN is modeled after BI’s youth movement, Generation Identitaire (GI). Heimbach and Parrott’s aim is to attract white youth to their movement and to convince them to take part in direct action events.

Heimbach also used Stormfront, the largest white supremacist Internet forum, to advertise the “Koran Barbeque” event. He encouraged people to join in the event, stating, “this can go along with protesting a mosque or any activity to let the Islamic invaders know that they are not welcome.”

TYN is not the only extremist groups planning to burn Qur’ans on September 11.  Terry Jones, the pastor of the Dove World Outreach Center, a virulently anti-Muslim, anti-gay apostolic church formerly based in Gainesville, Florida, has said that his group would burn copies of the Qur’an that day.

Aside from the “Koran Barbecue,” Heimbach and Parrott recently passed out flyers in the town of Perry, Michigan, advertising TYN. Perry is just 12 miles south of Owosso, where TYN has a P.O. Box. The flyers handed out by Heimbach and Parrott attack “conservatives” for being surprised when “feminism, globalism, open borders, radical Islam, and anti-White racism always end up winning.” The flyers also allege that the left “hates us because we represent a genuine threat to Culutral Marxists, to Organized Jewry, and to Global Capitalism.”

On August 26, Parrott, Heimbach and Thomas Buhls, the white supremacist founder of the Indiana University chapter of TYN, protested outside a left-leaning bookstore in Bloomington, Indiana, claiming it was a “Marxist organization.”

Heimbach and Parrott recently attended and addressed the third annual “Practical Politics Seminar” hosted by white supremacist Don Black, founder of Stormfront, in Tennessee. Other attendees included white supremacists David Duke, Paul Fromm and Sam Dickson. In the past, TYN’s few members limited their activities to networking on the Internet and attending white supremacist events, but are trying to use the flyer campaign and planned Qur’an burning event to draw more attention and followers to their cause.

Georgia Police Chief To Join Extremists At Anti-Immigration Protest

Lewis Smith, the chief of police of Uvalda, a small town in the state of Georgia (population around 600), has announced his intention to join an anti-immigration protest organized by white supremacists and neo-Confederate groups.

Smith indicated he planned to attend the event, scheduled for August 24 in Uvalda, on the Facebook page of the League of the South (LOS). LOS is an implicitly racist group that seeks to create a South predicated on “Anglo-Celtic” cultural dominance.  The original Facebook posting (which has since been modified) stated that the organizers of the event were Hunter Wallace (whose real name is Brad Griffin), a white supremacist who runs “Occidental Dissent” and Michael Cushman, who runs “Southern Nationalist Network.” “Occidental Dissent” is a racist blog that focuses on the South and “Southern Nationalist Network” is a neo-Confederate blog that focuses on “Southern identity.”

Others announcing they would attend the event include Matthew Heimbach, a white supremacist leader with the Traditionalist Youth Network, and Kyle Rogers, a key player in the white supremacist Council of Conservative Citizens. Michael Hill, the president of the League of the South, will also attend the event, along with other LOS members. The protest will purportedly focus on the claim that “immigration is destroying our Southern Culture.”

Immigration has recently played a significant role in the politics of tiny Uvalda. The mayor, Paul Bridges, has been very vocal in his opposition to HB87, Georgia’s harsh anti-immigration law passed in 2011. Bridges joined a 2011 lawsuit challenging the law, filed by the American Civil Liberties Union and the Southern Poverty Law Center.

Since 2011, Bridges and Smith have been involved in a series of disputes. Some of the disagreements between the two seem to have stemmed from issues related to immigrants living in the town.

Founder Of White Student Union At Georgia State Has History Of Espousing Extreme Views

A freshman student from Alabama, Patrick Sharp recently founded an informal “White Student Union” on the campus of Georgia State University in Atlanta. According to newspaper reports, Sharp, started the group to celebrate white identity. patrick-sharp

In an interview with the Atlanta Journal Constitution, Sharp argued that as whites inevitably become a minority in the United States, they should not back away from expressing pride in the white race and white heritage.  His statement echoes the views of a number of American white supremacists.

Later in the same interview, Sharp revealed that his inspiration for starting the White Student Union was racist Matthew Heimbach, who founded the White Student Union at Towson University in Maryland in 2012. Sharp viewed videos of Heimbach, who has been the subject of media attention. A recent short documentary on Heimbach created by the alternative news service VICE has almost 300,000 views on YouTube.

Heimbach is no longer the White Student Union leader at Towson, but runs the Traditionalist Youth Network (TYN) with white supremacist Matt Parrott, the former head of the Indiana branch of the white supremacist organization Council of Conservative Citizens (CofCC) and the white supremacist political party American Freedom Party (AFP).

According to Parrott, TYN is “the first attempt to adapt the European New Right’s ideals to the American context for street action, and it already includes an impressive selection of America’s most active and respected young street activists and public advocates.” The group appears to be modeled after Generation Identitaire, the youth movement arm of the far-right French political party Bloc Identitaire, led by Fabrice Robert. The website for the Georgia State White Student Union links to TYN, calling it “our sister organization.”

Sharp’s online footprint indicates that he shares the ideology of Parrott and Heimbach. Sharp’s Facebook page shows that he “likes” a slew of European far-right political parties, figures and movements including Fabrice Robert, Generation Identitaire and Jobbik, a virulently anti-Semitic Hungarian political party that once called for the creation of a list of Jews in Hungary who pose a “national security risk.”

Sharp also has also posted extreme comments on Facebook. In a posting dated December 1, 2011, Sharp wrote “I hope more Americans, and ESPECIALLY Europeans begin to wake up to the threat that is Islam. There is no place for Islam in the West.” In another post dated February 8, 2012, Sharp wrote, “The people carrying out these programs of White Genocide say they are anti-racist. What they are is anti-White. Anti-racist is a code word for anti-White!” In addition, Sharp has a profile on the website of the white supremacist publication American Renaissance published by racist Jared Taylor.

While Sharp is one example of a college student inspired by emerging young leaders in the white supremacist movement in the United States such as Matt Parrott and Matthew Heimbach, it remains to be seen whether American racists can successfully create an actual  youth movement in this country modeled after far-right European youth movements.
