Alison Weir’s New Billboard Campaign Promotes USS Liberty Conspiracies

Alison Weir, the director of the anti-Israel organizations If Americans Knew and the Council for the National Interest, is behind a series of billboards that read “Help the USS Liberty Survivors Attacked by Israel.”

The billboards, which have appeared so far in California, Connecticut, Massachusetts, North Carolina and Pennsylvania, are “paid for by,” a website that promotes the anti-Israel conspiracy theory that Israel intentionally targeted a U.S. warship during the height of the 1967 Six-Day War. This website as well as the GoFundMe page raising money for the billboards are linked to anti-Israel activist Alison Weir.

The tragic assault by Israeli forces during the Six Day War in 1967 on an American vessel, the USS Liberty, has been a source of controversy and conspiracy theories since it occurred. Several government investigations have concluded that the attack, in which 34 American servicemen were killed and many more injured, was carried out in error. Furthermore, every piece of information declassified to date has supported this conclusion.

Nevertheless, the Honor Liberty Vets website claims Israel had a “motive” for attacking the American ship, stating “One hypothesis is that Israel intended to sink the ship (with no survivors) and blame Egypt because this might have brought the United States into the 1967 war.” The site also paints Israeli interests as trumping America’s: “No nation or people should be above the law; nor should American interests be subordinated to the interests of any foreign nation. Those Israelis responsible for ordering the attack and the resulting murder of American sailors must be held accountable for their actions.”

For Weir, and others who subscribe to the belief that Israel intentionally targeted the ship with the goal of killing American servicemen, the incident and the alleged U.S. government cover-up that followed powerfully demonstrate the supposed treachery and power of the Jewish State and its American supporters. The story, told from this perspective, has become a propaganda tool to undermine the legitimacy of Israel.

These theories about the USS Liberty fit into Weir’s worldview, in which the Jewish State is a violent aggressor that corrupts the American political system and prevents criticism of its conduct from being voiced by the mainstream media. As a result, she contends, Americans are kept in the dark about how their taxes fund Israeli mistreatment of Palestinians.

In Weir’s discussions of Israel’s influence, she often employs anti-Semitic imagery and portrays Israel as a ruthless force that controls American policy through brutal intimidation and deception. Weir views herself and her organizations as part of a growing movement to promote U.S. interests by educating Americans about the vast conspiracy to keep the truth about Israeli practices hidden from them.

Weir’s Council for the National Interest, an anti-U.S. aid to Israel group based in DC, previously employed billboards to disseminate its messaging with a 2013 campaign called “Stop the Blank Check to Israel.” At least ten such ads, which read, “$8 Million a day to Israel just doesn’t make sense! STOP The Blank,” were erected in Atlanta.

Anti-Semitic Flyers At UC-Santa Barbara Blame Jews for 9/11

Anti-Semitic flyers alleging that “9/11 was an outside job” and that “9/11 was Mossad” were posted on the campus of the University of California, Santa Barbara last week. The flyers included the addresses of two websites that promote the idea that Israel and Jews were behind the 9/11 terrorist attacks. The flyer also included the web address of a group that accuses Israel of intentionally attacking an American ship and influencing the U.S. government to cover up the attack. At this point it is unclear who distributed the flyers.911-flyer-ucsb-september-2014

The three websites listed are:

Rediscover 911

“Rediscover 911” is one of the most virulent websites devoted to promoting anti-Semitic 9/11 conspiracy theories. The site is run by a small group of people active in the “9/11 truth movement” who promote anti-Semitic views. They accuse Israel and Jews of being behind the terrorist attacks.  Re-Discover 9/11 not only blames the Israeli government for carrying out the 9/11 attacks as a “false flag” operation, but also demonizes Jews and spreads anti-Semitic stereotypes.

The 2008 anti-Semitic conspiracy video “Missing Links:The Definitive Truth About 9/11,” as well as updated versions, also blames Jews and Israel for carrying out the attacks.  The video is divided into various sections, all of which present Jews as evil and duplicitous. Produced by Mike Delaney, “Missing Links” invents a mythical group, the sayanim, described in the video as a network of everyday Jews who carry out nefarious deeds to serve Israel and the Jews. The video promotes numerous anti-Semitic conspiracy theories that blame Israel and Jews for the 9/11 attacks as well as other incidents and paints various Jews who worked for the U.S. government as criminals.

USS Liberty

The website makes the conspiratorial allegation that Israel attacked the USS Liberty ship in 1967 knowing that it was an American ship and that they were killing American servicemen. While the website claims to separate itself from anti-Semitic positions and groups, it promotes the idea that there is a powerful pro-Israel lobby made up of “anti-American apologists.” The website claims that the U.S. government helped Israel cover-up the USS Liberty incident because of alleged Israeli control over the American political and military structure. It also makes the claim that U.S. elected officials have been “unwilling to challenge Israel’s interests when they conflict with American interests.”

Press TV Airs Anti-Semitic Interviews to Mark U.S.S. Liberty Anniversary

Press TV, Iran’s English-language propaganda television station, marked the 45th anniversary of the sinking of the USS Liberty by interviewing anti-Israel and anti-Semitic activists Alison Weir, Michael Santomauro, and J. Bruce Campbell.
During the interview, which was held on June 8, the trio accused Israel of purposefully targeting the U.S. warship during the height of the 1967 Six-Day War. (The circumstances surrounding the U.S.S. Liberty, an American ship that was unintentionally fired on by Israeli forces, has been regular fodder for anti-Israel conspiracy theorists.) The interview also included several anti-Semitic statements and conspiratorial accusations of Jewish control over the U.S. government.
Michael Santomauro, an anti-Israel blogger and Holocaust denier, alleged that the USS Liberty is a cover-up maintained by U.S.-based Jewish support for Israel and the disproportionate influence Jews hold over the U.S. government. Jewish interest groups, whom Santomauro claimed provide over the overwhelming amount of funding to U.S. political parties, wield their power through what he termed “Jewish PAC money.”
J. Bruce Campbell, a contributing writer for the anti-Semitic website, Veterans Today, claimed that the attack on the Liberty was part of a conspiratorial U.S-Israeli plan he called Operation Cyanide, a secret military operation that Campbell alleges purposefully sent the Liberty to get sunk by the Israelis in order to place blame on Egypt. The desired result, Campbell claims, would have been for the U.S. to retaliate against Egypt and to “drop nuclear bombs on Cairo and Alexandria.” Campbell asserted that this was ordered by the U.S. to assist Israel in creating “great [sic] Israel stretching from the Nile to Euphrates rivers.”
When asked by the host whether he agrees that Israel controls the U.S. government, Campbell responded, “I would say the Jews in America [run the United States]. Israel is a euphemism … It is really American Jews who are behind this [the Iraq and Afghanistan wars] just as it was during 1967…” Campbell also claimed that American Jews want to kill “millions of Muslims” and “thousands of Americans. This is what American Jews want, this is what they make happen through Washington D.C.”
Alison Weir, president of the Council for the National Interest (CNI), an anti-Israel organization that opposes U.S. aid to Israel, added to Santomauro’s comment about the pro-Israel lobby and characterized the U.S-Israel relationship as an “extremely unhealthy situation.” Weir also said that large sums of donations from pro-Israel groups are the cause of “tragedy, misery, violence and war after war after war.” Weir’s comments are consistent with her record of using anti-Semitic imagery and portraying Israel and its agents as powerful forces that control American policy through intimidation and deception.
Press TV, which is based in Tehran, is used by the clerical regime to provide a platform for extreme elements and activists to air their views and opinions. Many of Press TV’s U.S.-based guests are frequently invited by the station specifically for their conspiratorial anti-Israel views. Earlier this year, Weir appeared as a guest on the station to discuss the 2012 American Israel Public Affairs Committee (AIPAC) conference, calling the pro-Israel lobby “very dangerous to the world” and “for Americans.”
