White Supremacist Backing Trump Has Ties to Hardcore Racists

William Johnson, the head of the white supremacist American Freedom Party (AFP), has paid for a series of robocalls and radio time in Iowa in support of Donald Trump’s candidacy. In a recent interview on CNN, Trump disavowed the robocalls but said that “people are angry at what’s going on.”

On the calls, Johnson urges people to support Trump while referring to  himself as a farmer and a white nationalist. The calls also include a pitch for Trump from another white supremacist, Jared Taylor, who runs the American Renaissance website. The site features articles that purport to demonstrate the intellectual and cultural superiority of whites.

While Johnson projects a suit and tie image as a lawyer and activist, he has long courted the more hardcore members of the white supremacist movement. This past summer, he was a speaker at Camp Comradery 2015, a white supremacist event in Bakersfield, California, that included racist skinheads from various groups, including Blood and Honor, Golden State Skinheads and California Skinheads.

At the event, Johnson encouraged attendees to run for political office and to promote a pro-white message to the public.

Another speaker at the event was Matthew Heimbach, the founder of the white supremacist Traditionalist Youth Network, and a virulent anti-Semite. At the event, Heimbach gave a speech blaming Jews for destroying the white race.

In February 2012, Johnson attended a demonstration in Los Angeles for the South Africa Project, a national initiative to advocate against alleged white genocide in South Africa. A number of racist skinheads participated in the event.

For years, Johnson has promoted the idea of a white ethno-state in America. In the 1980s, Johnson, under the pseudonym “James O. Pace,” promoted a scheme called the “Pace Amendment” to a variety of people, including members of the U.S. Congress and state legislatures.

The Pace Amendment would have eliminated the Fourteenth Amendment (which grants automatic citizenship to anyone born in the United States) and limited citizenship only to “non-Hispanic whites of the European race, in whom there is no ascertainable trace of Negro Blood, nor more than one-eighth Mongolian, Asian, Asia Minor, Middle Eastern, Semitic, Near Eastern, American Indian, Malay or other non-European or non-white blood.” Those who did not fit this category, including Jews, would be repatriated to places deemed their countries of origin.

A 1987 ADL report on the Pace Amendment identified ties between Johnson and a range of neo-Nazi organizations and leaders, including the now-deceased Richard Butler, then leader of the neo-Nazi group Aryan Nations; Dan Gayman, a leader in the white supremacist Christian Identity movement; and Tom Metzger, who was closely aligned with the racist skinhead movement in the 1980s and 1990s. Johnson is also a long-time associate of Klan leader Thom Robb and has been a guest speaker at Robb’s events.

While Johnson is purportedly trying to reach out to disaffected whites on behalf of Trump, he presumably would like to win those same people over to his white supremacist ideology.

As a 501(c )(3) non-profit organization, the Anti-Defamation League does not support or oppose candidates for political office.

American White Supremacists Attend Russian Nationalist Conference

On March 22, American white supremacists Jared Taylor and Sam Dickson addressed the International Russian Conservative Forum in St. Petersburg, which featured Russian nationalists and representatives from extreme-right parties in Europe. The extreme-right parties included Greece’s Golden Dawn, Germany’s National Democratic Party and Italy’s Forza Nuova. The visit to Russia is another example of American white supremacists trying to build ties with their European counterparts.

Taylor heads American Renaissance (AR), an online journal that hosts yearly conferences. He often speaks to audiences in Europe about white nationalism in America. Over the past three years, he has attended nationalist gatherings in France, England, Turkey and Hungary. The conference in Hungary in October 2014 was hosted by the National Policy, Institute, an American white supremacist think tank that also has close ties to nationalists in Europe.

Dickson is a regular speaker at conferences sponsored by AR and the white supremacist Council of Conservative Citizens. At the conference in Russia, Taylor and Dickson both talked about preserving the white race and battling “Third-World immigration” in the United States. Apparently, both men also lauded Vladimir Putin, the president of Russia, who is seen as a promoter of traditionalist values in the West.

Other white supremacists in the U.S. have embraced Putin for encouraging nationalism and Orthodox Christianity in Russia. These extremists believe that Putin and Russia represent the antithesis of the global, multicultural, modern society represented by America and Western Europe.

In February, William Johnson of the American Freedom Party (AFP) posted an interview he gave to Nicholas Truschalov of the nationalist Russian Imperial Party, who reportedly attended the conference in St. Petersburg. Like Taylor and Dickson, Johnson talked about preserving the white race in America. When Truschalov asked Johnson about who was defending national identity and traditional values in the U.S. Johnson named Taylor and Dickson as two significant thinkers in the white nationalist movement. Johnson also declared that the AFP supports nationalists worldwide when Truschalov asked what Johnson would like to tell Russian nationalists.

Matthew Heimbach of the Traditionalist Youth Network has also promoted Russia. In a February article entitled, “The New Shining City on the Hill: Mother Russia,” Heimbach praised Russia as the “true defender of Traditionalism.” He added that Putin is “doing the exact opposite of what the Bush and Obama administrations are doing and that is why Traditionalists should look to Russia for inspiration.”

Racist Group Begins Youth Recruitment Effort

The American Freedom Party (AFP), a white supremacist group, has recently established a youth wing, the National Youth Front (NYF). NYF, which officially launches in February, has already created a website, a Facebook page, and a recruitment video to appeal to young people between the ages of 18 and 40.

In an introduction on its website, NYF claims that it is “an elite youth organization dedicated to the preservation of America our Western culture [sic].” In addition to creating a flyer about the group, NYF has created a polished recruitment video aimed at young people. It decries their parents’ acceptance of diversity and claims that young whites are “the victims of [their] parents’ childish liberation movements” from the 1960s. The video is called a “Declaration of War” and is similar to videos circulated by far-right youth groups in Europe, which chide previous generations’ acceptance of multiculturalism.

NYF chose three interconnecting triangles known as the Valknot or “knot of the slain,” an old Norse symbol, to represent the group. It is often considered a symbol of the Norse god Odin. Some white supremacists, particularly racist Odinists, have appropriated the Valknot to use as a racist symbol. Often they use it as a sign that they are willing to give their life to Odin, generally in battle.

Leaders in the group include Nathan Damigo and Daxter Reed, also known as Daecca Reed. Damigo is an Iraq war veteran who was released from prison in April 2014 after serving time for pulling a gun on a taxi driver, a crime he attributed to PTSD. Damigo is the acting chairman of NYF and also holds the position of director of PR and outreach. Reed, who is from Asheville, North Carolina, is director of national chapters. Reed is active in Asheville Youth Front, a local chapter of NYF and is seen on that chapter’s Facebook page handing out a NYF flyer. On his Facebook page, Reed “liked” Hitler’s Mein Kampf.

Unofficially in existence since November 2014, NYF has already lost its first chairman, Caleb C. Shumaker. Shumaker resigned on January 6, citing recent attacks against him and his family. He was formerly a member of the Conservative Youth Council, an affiliate of the far-right Conservative Party USA. In his farewell column, Shumaker claimed that NYF already has nine chapters around the country, although there is little evidence of activity at this point.

AFP was originally founded in October 2009 as American Third Position (A3P), “to represent the political interests of White Americans.” Today the organization’s leadership is made up of older well-established white supremacists such as California lawyer William Johnson, anti-Semitic ex-professor Kevin MacDonald and James Edwards, who runs The Political Cesspool, a radio show based in Tennessee. AFP is apparently trying to attract young people to bring new energy into the group, which has mostly run unsuccessful candidates for local positions.
